    Its a thankless job.
I've done it on another forum, and you wouldn't believe how whiny grown ups can be when telling tales behind each other's backs. And how abusive when you try to help everyone, but please no one. Anyone here is free to volunteer for the job.
    Been away for a while.

I see this thread has reached the graveyard ...

ETA: Is there some way of reading a thread (say this one) and being able to tell that it originated on another board, and was moved here part way through the sequence of posts?

They're moderators, regardless of what they want to call themselves. If you moderate a forum you're a moderator, no two ways about it.

MSE doesn't take any notice of the views of its users.

That is really unfair and not true imo, look at what they did when the new look forum was launched in keeping the old version active for the forseeable future (instead of the "short while" it was supposed to be)

a moderator could be more proactive, would see more of whats going on/wrong and nip it in the bud

If you can call the current green and above users the "forum team" and higher then yes I think these boards would benefit strongly from having (non paid. volunteer) users with some deleting/moving/warning/ppr powers commonly known as "mods" on other forums. Spam would be deleted quicker and warnings could be issued before ppr/thread deletion had to take place. Of course such power should only be given to posters of at least several years who are respected by everyone and don't ever enter into childish arguments. There should be one or two for every individual section/board imo.

IMO, they simply realised that they would lose too many active forum users if they didn't allow them to continue using the (now called) 'old' version.
    Self-interest, I'd call it.

And I don't think the 'foreseeable' future is all that long either.

80 + members of staff in MSE Towers and I've never seen such a poorly 'run' forum.

Spamming is endemic in the forums despite the previous owners 'apology'. He's clearly too busy pointing out important things like Oh look! my sprog is 1,000 days old.

He's taken his eye off the ball since he met the wife and the site is all the poorer for it.

They don't lose members....they PPR them and still count them as members....bizarre really! There is no mechanism to resign and delete your details.
