Its nothing to do with the type of car, its his age. My daughter will start driving next year and I played around with the comparison sites just to see how much I would be looking at to have her as a named driver, the cheapest was £1500 and that for a 1.2 Skoda Fabia. That's despite almost 20 years NCB.

You are right - within reason.

A few years back I added a young relative to my Freelander policy for a 3 week period to go on a touring holiday for £40- but no way would they do it for a BMW 535D unless I paid silly money

I have 23 years claim free - which company gives 20 years NCB? - the most I can get is 10 years NCB - or did you mean to say that you had 20 years claim free?

Thank you photome. This car insuance is a blooming nightmare. I have just brought him 4 week holiday insurance interailing around Europe. Now that was really cheap £15!)

I dont remember insurance being anything like this amount in my day (sorry, it makes me sound 100 years old!)

The risk to the insurer for a motor policy for an 18 yr old is so much greater than for holiday insurance that it's not funny.

I paid £280 for a year of tpft insurance on my first car when I was 18, a Morris Marina 1.8. Insurers hadn't woken up to how big a risk teenagers were back then (mid-late 1980s). My dad only had to pay £50/year extra on his fully comp policy for "any driver with the policy holder's permission" on his car, which sorted me out nicely for borrowing it!

I paid £60 for insurance on my first car when I was 17. It was an Austin Cambridge and I could have done a lot of damage with that car but fortunately I didn't. Next car at 18 was a 2.6 litre Rover 100 and insurance was only £80; sometimes the brakes faded ! happy days.

To the OP. In the past I have found Liverpool-Victoria very good for adding young drivers temporarily; give them a try.

I could potentially downgrade my car to say a Fiesta but I am loath to do this as I use my car every day and like the Audi.

This would probably cost more anyway, as insurers do load up premiums on cars that are typically driven by young drivers. Also because of the recent change to stop gender based insurance premiums, insurers now load up premiums on cars that are typically driven by male drivers.

You can get temporary insurance. My brother did- once to drive my car for a week and once to pick up his new car and drive it to my dads garage to store it until he sold his current car. Google temporary insurance and a number of companies specialise in it. Realistically though how much is he going to use it if you drive it to work every day?
