Young driver on parents car

I am due to come out of the company car scheme and buy my own car using the car allowance and have chosen an Audi A1 Sportback 1.6. I do a mixure of business and personal miles. The insurance for this car isnt an issue for me...

I would like to put my 18 year old son who has just passed his test last month on my insurance but as he will be at a northern university it seems a complete waste to insure him for the whole year when he will really only be home for uni holidays 3 times a year.

I have been given a complete run around by insurance companies one of whom told me that I could have temporary car insurance for him up to 3 times a year at a cost of £135 for each 28 day period. That I have found out is not true.

I dont have the car yet but have you chaps any idea what I can do. The best quote I have had for myself and my husband (me business use) is £400 and another £1800 for my son.

I could potentially downgrade my car to say a Fiesta but I am loath to do this as I use my car every day and like the Audi.

He has only just turned 18. No convictions, offences etc!

Will he actually use the car when he's at home for the holidays?

Since 2 of them are only 2 weeks long, you're probably cheaper paying for taxi's for him.

I think unfortunately that's the way it is. You can't pick and choose when he's on the policy and when he isn't. Based on anecdotal evidence he'll only scrape/dent/stack the beloved Audi at some point anyway, so save yourself the expense!

The cheapest solution is simply for him to hire a car when he needs one.

Even for a total of six weeks with CDW it would be cheaper than the inevitable accident repairs and NCB losses you will suffer.

No offence to your son but the statistics/balance of probabilities show that he is very likely to be involved in some type of claim in his early driving career.

Especially if he goes 4 months between stints of driving.

There seem to be all sorts of answers here. Some are saying that you cannot do short term insurance but one chap is saying he has obtained temp insurance for his son in the same scenario. It is SO confusing and complex.

I have been on the phone all afternoon. The holidays are much more than 2 weeks at a time. The summer break is nearly 2 months and Easter is nearly 4 weeks. I have spoken to Elephant and they say he can be covered for a max of 120 days in the year at 28 days maximum at £45 per week for the Audi.

This is the sort of cover we need. As I dont have the car yet I cannot confirm whether they are as good as their word but thanks to everyone who has replied to date

    More than

it isnt temp insurance in his own right I have added him as a named driver for 21 days at a time, which i think is what you are wanting to do

from memory I do think 21 days was the maximum at any one time

Thank you photome. This car insuance is a blooming nightmare. I have just brought him 4 week holiday insurance interailing around Europe. Now that was really cheap £15!)

I dont remember insurance being anything like this amount in my day (sorry, it makes me sound 100 years old!)

I think that it would have cost a bit more if he was going to be the train driver. ;)

I'm not going to ask you how long ago that was - but did you have the use of a car similar in cost/performance to the Audi at age 18?

These are changed days and it's all down to statistics.

Unfortunately a University student with no driving experience is a 'high risk'.
