  • Afternoon lovelies hope everyone is good, lovely to see the thread so busy on a Monday :)

ally what rotten luck! Hope you're not too disappointed but totally know what it's like to not have any income and any unnecessary expenses feels like a major blow :( hope you're oh is ok! Lovely advice from foxgloves though :A

FatvonD nice one re the carpets :j also lol to the "slag bol veg" :rotfl: sounds like your dinner is going to be more lively than mine! ;)

Bit disappointed as had an interview for a position I was very interested in and just got a call to say I wasn't successful :( and now tomorrow I am going to give our childminder notice  oh & I discussed this at the weekend and decided we can't afford to wait until the end of August as we have to give her 4 weeks notice and our Sept bill would be £530 after childcare vouchers. Agreed we just can't afford to eat into our savings like this. Trying to keep positive that the universe is looking after me and things will turn out for the best...

Anyway keep positive with the small things!

    * check bank balances and made sure there are no nasty surprises
    * Did a meal plan and shopping list
    * went shopping and stuck to the list with exception of 4 things that I forgot to put on there
    * ordered stroller for dgd and used £5 moc via Tesco (someone stole ours when we were on holiday ) total cost £19 :T
    * made packed lunch for dgd
    * had lo couscous, hummus (nearly used it all up :j) and salad from garden :T
    * spag bol out of freezer for dinner - will have more salad leaves from garden
    * will have lo apple crumble and custard to use up crumble ;)
    * didn't go into town and buy a pair of jeans like I wanted to while there after interview!
    * water any veggies that need it
    * plant more salad leaves and a couple of cuttings - took a couple of sprigs from a white lavender bush I saw yesterday...
    * quick tidy round
    * might go for a run if I can be bothered :o

Ok think those are my efforts for today. Have a lovely rest of the day x

Ally, I always use those so called charity bags for bin liners, too. I have never heard of the charities they purport to belong to - and there were warnings locally that some of these collections are/ were linked with criminal gangs. There are several charity shops in town that I prefer to take unwanted clothes to.

On one occasion I decided to give them the benefit of the doubt, put a few items in one of the bags and left it out. Guess what? Nobody ever came back to collect it. So, now it is bin bags all the way. We get at least one most days, despite my no cold callers, no junk mail etc sign  Still, I haven't had double glazing sales people since I have had the sign up, so it was worth the two quid it cost from ebay just for that!

I rarely fill charity bags which come through the door, so have a never-ending stream of free bin bags. Out town has loads of charity shops, so they are always short of donated goods to sell. Like Dawn, I prefer to take my stuff along in person. A couple of years ago, it was noticed by someone in our village that many of the bags which arrive are from charities we've never heard of, & if you read the small print on those & on bags from some of the better known charities, you find out that the clothes are going to be sold abroad & a % donation given to the charity. I'm not saying that's iffy as such, but I do think that it cuts down on the money charities could potentially receive, so I'd rather give to charity shops direct. mr f has a theory that absolutely anybody could drive around in a van picking up bags, then take the clothes to one of the 'Weigh in' points & keep the money. However, I use his reluctance to leave donations outside in the drive to make him carry the bags to the charity shop, so result!

Savvy Shopper! I've been Money Tipped!
    edited 27 July 2015 at 6:59PM
    Hello
Back again, was really pleased to just check TopCashback as I have done every evening for the past 6 months, and discover that my £31.50 for purchasing my home contents insurance for the year, back in January! Had finally turned to payable. So I've hoiked it out, & paid it straight to CC2, taking my score for the month to £677.12 paid to the CC/topping up EF. That was a really nice boost as I was feeling very tired.

Hannah - I did sleep better thank you. Although I feel I've hit a wall today on the energy front from about 2pm onwards it was like wading through treacle. I am going to take a hint from my body & have a very early bath & bed. At least your kids arent asking for the heating on, have seen a few people saying they've given in and put it on this week! Hope you had fun with your family today, good about your survey pay out, or it will be in er September (school shoes?)

SaveSaving - Good luck finding a cheaper place to stay. What area are you in roughly?

Ally - Thanks for that tip. Ive seen other Minimalists mention photographing art work before then letting it go.

Tyrone - Good for you. I am such an ex smoker style bore now to all the regulars on here, but my story is I gave up my car last August, & now my family & I all cycle. We've saved thousands across the year on petrol, running costs etc. Is it an option to cycle to work? If so, the savings can be massive.

Floella - Hello! Really sorry you are feeling poorly, it is horrible being pregnant and not being able to take meds. Sympathy to you.
Yes my OH has an enormous collection. Its actually a huge pain. Hes 43 & collected from his late teens to early 30s. We have had some successs. In the early days we made £200 from selling 6 of his treasured ones. But since then, its very hit and miss. We've looked into selling them en mass, but we'd make a huge loss on what they should be worth. But its a pain having to keep listing, relisting on ebay etc....

Dawn - I think its because we are conditioned to be people pleasers as women. Sorry if thats a bit political or whatever but I see it in so many of my friends, read it on here, women going into huge debt secretly because they want to keep the family going, having the little things that make them happy, whilst going without themselves. I see it in myself. I would do anything to make my son happy, if I have the cash, but me, I'll go without for months on end. Physchology. Good luck with your FF too. Also, sorry about the leaky dog (again)

Ratison - Sorry you are poorly lovely. Take care.

Maria - I have never made crustless quiche either...Any sign of those goose babies?

Twiggy - How is your leg now? Glad your lodger is gone, he sounded a pain in the bleep.

FVD - Good luck with your NS Week. You sound well prepared. Can you get your DD dates changed? I have had to do that a while back due to OHs pay date changing. Much easier now. Liking the cryptic clues to what you are going to do next year as well :)

Ally - What a crying shame! Is there any chance of some compensation for that happening? Worth pushing your luck asking? I had an appointment a while ago, since the pregnancy, and they let me walk out without paying for the hygienst at £40 a pop. I thought it was odd at the time, but I booked it, they didnt ask for money, turned up, no ask, & left still no ask. Then to get a letter a month later saying I owed them it. I rang them, was polite but calm and just said I didnt think I should have to pay if they cant train their staff properly. The practise manager was pleasant about it and agreed. So result. Perhaps worth a shot? Also, thank you for the Mr T tip off, will have a nose at mine as well.

Foxgloves - Thats a massive cut on your groceries, is it a use it up month? Annoying about the ebay listings, sorry you cant get into the dentist sooner.

Determined - Sorry about the job. And the childminder. Do you think she could slot you back in easily once you do find more work? Its such a shame to lose a good one. You still didnt tell me what a Cucamelon is?

    Bob, you're welcome.

Good idea. I am about to fire off an email to the practice manager.

On the quiche theme - I made this after seeing it on someone's diary (wish I could remember who) and it's delicious. You kind of get a thin base at the bottom with the flour, but no faffy pre-baking.

I think it's a Mexican fruit the size of a grape. Looks like a melon but tastes like a cucumber. (Link)

Tonight's crustless quiche was a hit with fussy OH. Result!

Half-cooked two sausages and some onion in a frying pan. Put this mixture in a flan dish with a handful of grated cheese, some dried basil, black pepper, couple of slices of salami, a couple of blobs of tomato puree and some garlic. Took five beaten eggs and poured them on top. Oven cook at 200c for 30 mins.

Thank you Ally! I can't help but feel Dirty Dancing would have been much improved if Baby had carried one of those :rotfl:
