Take a clothes peg for your nose, - our spaniel has it ocassionally, we know it playing up as he drags his bum over the floor, our last Spaniel was at the Vets about twice a yr for the emptying out x

It's vile isn't it? Never smelt anything so bad in my life.

Bum walking....Yes we call it scooting.

my lad has to have his glands emptied every six weeks, and Im more then happy to allow the vet to do the honours

first few times I had to leave the vets as he screamed that much

Now I can go in and hold him, but I have been known to puke across the floor myself :(

Thankfully the vet charges just £6.50

Not very good for them to be emptied regularly tbh. It is better if you can naturally let the dog excrete them through giving raw bones.

Max is definately a stinker! Will be making changes to his diet (more veg / fibre, possibly a change in dried dog food) to support him to empty his glands naturally. Don't plan on a manual extraction any more then absolutely necessary.

    True

However my lads anatomy is a tad weird. I can feed him as much fibre and bone as you could shake a stick at, and all that happens is he gets constipated and his glands stay full

So its a manual clear out every six weeks, or the OP and at 11, with his health problems, its not a route I or the vet wish to persue

Sorry, I certainly don't agree there!
It's a disgusting fishy smell and takes ages to 'fade' if you are unlucky enough to get it on shoes, clothes, hands!
I remember once at the vets it got liberally sprayed around- just like perfume-NOT!! my current boy doesn't need to attend the vet as he manages to do it naturally- last time on my bed (yes he is allowed cuddles!) but it went through bottom sheet onto the newly washed fitted mattress cover which takes forever to dry. AArgh!

My Jack Russell used to need a re-bot every few weeks. We changed her diet to wheat free (Lily's Kitchen) and haven't had to do it since (2.5 years now!)

Update. I have been adding extra veg to Max's diet all week. And the smell has gone. Seems like the extra veg has sorted the problem for now without needing a vets visit.

Will be continuing the diet additions, - hopefully we won't need to visit the vet again for a few months.
