I didnt think Russell Hobbs existed as a manufacturer anymore anyway? They originally had a factory in Stoke, which was then bought out by Creda ten years or more ago. Creda just announced its closing the factory at christmas with many job losses.
  • Lots of "household names" don't exist other than as brands, usually applied to goods made in the far east. I doubt if anybody makes microwaves in this country any more.

Similarly, luxury Jaguar cars were made by Ford (until recently - I think they've sold that brand now). I believe one Jaguar model was basically a Mondeo underneath.

Going back to the original post, the £80 microwave failed after 14 months and Currys gave a £40 refund. If you think an £80 microwave should last longer than 28 months that is a poor deal, If you don't it is a good deal.

I suppose the moral of all this is don't buy goods on the basis of a brand name reputation you remember from decades ago. Ask in places like this forum for feedback from satisfied (or dissatisfied) owners.

You get what you pay for, the door on my 4 year old Panasonic became faulty.
Rang Panasonic who arranged to send an engineer round, new part was ordered and fitted free of charge.

    Mine was made in Wales.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

I'm impressed with that level of service. Out of interest, how much did you pay for it?

Philips dont do microwaves any longer.!!!

The reference to a con is that they sell a product with a household name (Russell Hobbs) which is not even manufactured by them.

Very few brands make their own products these days, they just use contract factories in the far east.
Ths should be pointed out to a buyer when purchasing the product. It is actually made by Currys themselves apparantly.

Currys are a shop, they don't make microwaves.
If you went to a garage to buy a Ford on its reliable reputation, and you end up buying a car with a ford badge, but later turns out its made by Lada then you wouldn't be pleased.

Your cheapo microwave lasted 14 months, and may well still be repariable, Currys have offered you half of it's cost back, I baffled why you think this is a con.

Thanks Dave, I couldnt recall exactly what happened but it must have gone overseas then.

Sad really, we are all going to end up working in retail at this rate.

    A nation of shopkeepers.

Creda was sold to an Italian company, as with all these foriegn takeovers Creda ovens will still be sold in the UK, but made in Italy and Poland.

We're asset stripping our own country...
