ECONOMY 7 No More !
I have been on Economy 7 since I moved into my home, simply because the former residents had an Economy 7 meter installed. However, I do not have storage heaters, and rarely stay up late so there is little to no use during the Economy 7 "saving " period. I have been advised by an Energy specialist, who is actually connected with my provider, Ovo Electricity, to change my meter to a standard one. Apparently, I am paying one and a half times as much for my electricity during the day with Economy 7
However, I believe it will cost an extortionate £80 upwards, with Ovo, to have my meter replaced.
I have been wondering if it might be a good idea to change to another provider, simply, to have my meter changed, one who will provide the replacement ~ Free Of Charge, which I think some providers do. Prob is, I wish to remain with Ovo, as I really like the company.....
Would it be possible to switch to another provider, ~ briefly, then go back to Ovo after I get the free replacement meter ?
Not very kind thing to do to another provider, I know....
but I'm feeling the pinch, financially, right now..... so am pretty desperate.... and £80 is a lot of cash !

Is it one of the newer meters which, when you press a button, cycles through the different readings - gives you a day usage, a night usage and a total usage reading?
If so, why not ask if they can ignore the fact that it's an Economy 7 meter and just use the total reading for your meter reading - this way, you only supply one reading which should be a grand total of what has been used.
You never know, they might say yes.0 -
What is 'extortionate' about an £80 charge? £40 or £60 barely covers a call-out and a first hour.
Why would someone who chooses the tag 'Eco' child want to abuse services? Surely you should be volunteering to pay even more and cover the full cost of a change as otherwise you are promulgating a system that results in unnecessary consumption.0 -
Don t rush into swapping meters and dumping eco7, there are tariffs out there with such good eco 7 rates you would be getting some of the cheapest electricity in the country overall.Sainsburys Energy have an excellent eco 7 rate ( dual fuel direct debit on a one year fix ) where the day rate was as good as many other suppliers single rate day rate tariff. In my area ( S. Yorks ) the rate was approx 12p/kwhr day, 5p/kwhr night, that was a couple of months ago.I have been on Economy 7 since I moved into my home, simply because the former residents had an Economy 7 meter installed. I agree with Molerat, take command yourself and visit a comp site, (UKpower.co.uk is also good ) but make sure to finally switch via the Cheap Energy Club for £30 cashback0 -
Firstly take any advice from your current supplier's "energy advisers" with a pinch of salt.
Secondly, put your annual kWh usage into one of the comparison sites, I personally recommend using EnergyHelpLine, and change the comparisons between E7 and standard and see what comes out in your best interests. As stated above, you may well find that a different supplier can give you a good deal on E7.
edit: I have just checked my personal figures and I can actually save (although a negligible amount) being on E7 with a night use of only 25% with my current supplier. E7 is not the big bad it used to be.0 -
You don't need to change the meter. I lived in a house that had an E7 meter and my provider at the time (E.on) just added the readings together.0

I'm on economy 7 rate and my sister is on a standard rate, our electric prices work out very similar when we compared price per unit.0

Some suppliers will total the readings from a dual rate meter, some won't. No idea about Ovo in that respect.
£60-80 is a pretty standard fee for a meter replacement, that is not at all extortionate for the meter and labour involved.
2 minutes work on any comp site will tell you how much you will save on a single rate tariff-just put the figures in first for dual rate and then again for single rate, using the day/night percentage split for the former as indicated on your annual statement. The saving will depend on what percentage you use on night rate. You may not have NSH's, but if you use an immersion heater to heat the hot water overnight then E7 may still be the cheaper option, though less likely. No free lunch, and no free laptop

Thank you for the tip, DME, ( yes, it's one of those new type meters ) ...Sounds like an ~Excellent idea ! :j ..... However, I doubt they will do that, simply because...well, that's a rather unofficial idea..... and electricity companies, even Ovo, nice as they might seem ! are well steeped in officialdom .......:(
I'll ask 'em, anyway, mind you ! :cool:0 -
Nada 666 ,
living up to your serpent like title,eh ! spitting a piece of the old vitriol in my direction
I advise you keep your ignorant assumptions about me to yourself ...
or I will wop you with my, my, my ..... DAISY CHAIN !
I do not wish to " Abuse " as you assert, just want to avoid forking out what I believe to be rather hefty and unnecessary costs, which I can ill afford at the moment......
don't know what you mean by that Im " promulgating a system " ... or whatever......
I am just trying to ~Save Cash " which is what this Forum Is All About, isn'it !!! ?????
