"USB device is not recognised"

Options
Every time I plug a mobile phone into my computer, to charge it, I get the "USB device is not recognised" bubble, which goes on to say the device has "malfunctioned", which it hasn't, because I'm not trying to access it, just charge it.

Is there any way I can make Windows ignore the phones?

If it shows up in Device Manager, you could always set it as 'Disabled'
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

Would that disable the device, or the USB socket?

why dont you charge it from another usb source for example i charge from wii console...a radio with usb...or buy a normal plug with a usb port built in these are very cheap.

    What phone is it ?
Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.

It's two phones, both with the same charging socket.

    Samsung GT-E1080i and Samsung GT-E1190.

Same to you, always run into such situation. I tried once to switch off the USB button of my phone and then went smoothly.
    Better alone than badly accompanied.
  • Just plugged in my Vivitar Camcorder to charge, and no messages.

It's either because the camcorder is just a charging port or you have a valid driver for it. Your PC is recognising the phone as a device it needs a driver for and hasn't got one that works, It could make it very slow to charge if the port won't provide the full 500ma. It won't be all that quick if it does.
  • My phones charge very well, from the USB port.

A USB 1/2 port delivers 500ma max, USB 3 port can deliver 900ma but both would normally start low and ramp up on request A halfway decent charger will be 1000ma minimum and most are more. Although a USB port can be used for charging a phone with smartphone batteries being 2000mah or more a proper charger will be a lot quicker. It won't throw up annoying messages eithet.
