Flight diverted BA

My flight was diverted/cancelled from Rome to Naples 25th June 2015. Only because I checked in the night before did I find this out. BA do not let you check in before 24 hours that the flight leaves. I booked through Expedia who couldnt help. I paid £100 for taxi's and trains to Naples from Rome. The flight was leaving the same time but 150 miles away in Naples. The last day of the holiday was ruined and BA didnt offer to recompensate or arrange the extra travel. The plane was empty as 100 people who didnt check in were stranded in Rome.
I complained to BA who sent me a standard response and gave me £50 compensation.
Am I entitled to EU reg 261/2004 and if so, how much.
Any help would be gratefully received
