Sob Stories

On FB and Twitter "comment" comps do sob stories enhance your chances? I entered one on FB for Drayton Manor today as I'm going there next week anyway and going through the comments it's amazing all of the people who are poor, have kids who are disabled/autistic etc. It's crazy and looks like people are trying to outdo eachother in the "woe is me" stakes. It shouldn't bear any relevance to the competitions but I find it a bit shameful of people to be doing that. Is winning at any cost worth it?
I'm not wanting to appear heartless here, everyone has problems and issues however I wouldn't dream of trying to use any difficulty in my life for personal gain.

I agree totally I feel bad entering them as you say we all have our own personal problems, but you don't know if other are stretching the truth or not so I don't enter incase I take a prize from someone more deserving than me
There are some classic stories though

I should be going to Drayton manor because in 2003 in my sleep I grew a third arm. This have made it difficult to go to Drayton Manor, also because I was registered as disabled at the time it got really difficult to find a job. This meant that I got thousands of pounds in dept. in 2005 something really bizarre happened and my hamster turned blue, I then suffered from anxiety so this meant I didn't go to Drayton manor that year. It has been 12 years since I went last and I really could do with this trip.0

I did once see a reply to a sob story on a Facebook competition "So sorry to hear that, send us your details and we'll send you something to cheer her up", separate from the competition result. But if the comp will be won by a random draw I don't see the point.I’m a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Competition Time, Site Feedback and Marriage, Relationships and Families boards. The sob stories are sickening. I don't bother entering a comp if the post is full of sob stories ...
So depressing, so unnecessary and social media brings out the worst in people. It's making a lot of narcissists, too.0 -
I don't understand why folk do it just for the fact that surely what they are talking about going through is incredibly upsetting for them. Why would you want to broadcast something that distressing for everyone else to see, so they can see the pain you've gone or are going through? Why not talk about something positive as a reason you should win? Think that's a whole lot better, plus you'd stand out from the crowd full of sadness!0

I once saw on a Random Draw a long in depth sob story about how someone's husband has cancer, their dog died and they have a disabled child! I mean... in depth the post was huge!!
The prize was a bag of sweets....
Would one bag of Sweets REALLY make your awful like that much better? I find it sad that people almost glamorise illness in a way to win free things. Personally I would not want to post my most private life details on social media. I think it looks desperate and distasteful!Ask.. Believe.. Receive..

It annoys me sometimes. There was one in particular a while ago - it was a comp that you had to take a selfie with a certain thing, and the photos all got put into a gallery - I looked through and there was one pic of a woman in her hospital bed (without the thing you were supposed to selfie with), looking very ill, and her comment was something along the lines of she had terminal cancer and would love to win this for one of her girls ages 8 and 10. The prize was make up.TOP MONEYSAVING TIP
Make your own Pot Noodles using a flower pot, sawdust and some old shoe laces. Pour in boiling water, stir then allow to stand for two minutes before taking one mouthful, and throwing away. Just like the real thing!0 -
I think a lot of promoters are wise to it. I won a judged holiday competition recently. There were a lot of sob stories including one which was written on a piece of cardboard and put on a wheelchair for an entry picture. My entry was a humorous one...and it hit the mark. So it's possible to overcome the bleeding heart entries.0

I have a deep seated hatred for sob stories, the worse one I ever read was 'my daughter died last week its been so very hard, I could do with something to cheer me up'. (may not be actual wording but close enough) I just sat there thinking, I can't believe someone has put that on a competition entry!
I have to say though I hate the sob stories that get their mates to comment underneath with 'oh thats terrible, you so deserve to win hun' and 'if I win I want to donate it to 'sob story author' as she is so much more deserving than me, how brave'
I had to stop reading other peoples comments in the end as it just wound me up all the time.SPC No 002 SPC(3) £285/£250 (4) £519.84/£500 (5) £768.32/£500 (6) £911.30/£600 (7) £913.23/£600 (8) £1184.82/£750 (9) £2864.04/£750 (10) £3846.25/£1000 (11) £1779.72/£1000 (12) £1596.55/£1000 (13) £1534.70/£1000 (14) £775.60/£1000 (15) £700.20/£1000 (16) £2081.34/£1000 (17) £1691.15/£1000 (18) £25/£10000
