I have a deep seated hatred for sob stories, the worse one I ever read was 'my daughter died last week its been so very hard, I could do with something to cheer me up'. (may not be actual wording but close enough) I just sat there thinking, I can't believe someone has put that on a competition entry!

I have to say though I hate the sob stories that get their mates to comment underneath with 'oh thats terrible, you so deserve to win hun' and 'if I win I want to donate it to 'sob story author' as she is so much more deserving than me, how brave'

I had to stop reading other peoples comments in the end as it just wound me up all the time.

But what if the sob story is true though?

My nephew was born in awful circumstances and has profound disabilities, my sister had to leave her job completely and she's now resigned herself to be his full time carer for the rest of her life.

I try to enter some pampering comps for her (spa treatments, manicures, smellies etc as well as baby stuff) as she's not able to do much for herself. But some of these comps asks why I or she deserves to win. Although I don't go into specific details or play up on it, I do say she's deserving due to what her life is like now and what she's been though.

But I do agree that some are OTT or inappropriate. Worst I've seen is someone saying their relative just died and they want the money to go towards buying a memorable gravestone!

This is what I said above these folks could be telling the truth, or they could be stretching the truth a little or they could be totally lying.

Which ever it is we will never know for sure which is why breaking the mould and putting a happy/funny story is best or in my case not entering at all :(

Some people are telling the truth, and try to use this to their advantage.

I won't compete with someone who acts that way really - and i hope the prize makes the world of difference to them, but I somehow don't think it will.

I refuse to enter comps where you have to say why you deserve to win - it's like all the people commenting are trying to outdo eachother in who has/has had it worse.

I'm disabled but I refuse to use my disabilities and illnesses to help me try and win a competition. To me it's a bit like selling a piece of your soul.

OTT sob stories will surely put off the people running the prize too I would think.

Some require the effort of a story or reasons why one would deserve to win yet the winner is selected from random. what's the point of asking for effort then?!

Another thing I wonder is when there's a L&S comp on facebook. Some people have big glittering pictures that reads "I have liked and shared". No doubt it stands out but I'm curious to know if that helps.

People are starting to do that on twitter too, posting the same picture to pretty much every contest they enter.. it must work for them, or they wouldn't do it?

I think we should design and start using posters to see, big bright animated ones that would stick out like a sore thumb in Las Vegas. :D

BTW I love your cute pic. You could put writing above that as it is very eye catching.

Problem is, I do not know how to them kinda posters. :(
  • I entered a Twitter comp the other week to win a cake with a simple retweet, and I'd felt really unwell that day, and tweeted so in passing earlier that morning before I entered. I was then informed I was the winner "to cheer me up" !! They had looked at my earlier random tweet, I accidentally sob-storied myself :O
