Where do I stand?

Hi, Advice please.
Went Go Outdoors last Saturday for my sons DofE items, like new boots etc. I made the effort because they said my card expired 18th July.
It was a disappointing visit as expiring the 18th meant it was no longer useable on the 18th!
When we got home I noticed on the receipt that they had over charged me by £5 and despite us showing his DofE ID they hadn't taken off the 10% DofE discount of £16.25 either.
I emailed straight away and they got back to me today. They say they can see that I haven't been charged correctly and I can get a refund in store or give me Go Outdoor vouchers by post.
We live over half hour drive from the store and have no reason at all to venture into Go Outdoors within the next few years for supplies now so don't want vouchers. This is his Gold DofE and we have just stocked up on everything we need at Go Outdoors over the past three weeks spending over £400 with them.
Can I demand a refund in the form of a cheque or bank transfer?
I just want my money back without spending money on fuel and wasting two hours .
Any tips will be gratefully received.

You might get a better response by asking them if they could please provide a more suitable refund medium.
How did you pay? If by (a different) card, then perhaps ask them if they can refund back to that card.0 -
Thanks for the reply.
I paid with my debit card and would have preferred the refund back to the same card.
I thought before I replied to them I should ask a little advice.
Its all been very polite so far and I didn't want to rub them up the wrong way.
Just have no desire to venture to the store, when as they say, after checking they can see that I was over charged.0 -
You say your Go Outdoors card expired so did you renew it to use the discount ?0
-
Yes I had no choice but to renew.
I had visited the store on 8th July prior to the date when the mistake was made, I asked the girl on the till to check when the last day of use would be for the card.
I suspected it was near to expiry-( its DofE season so would have been stocking up 12months ago for his expedition last year.)
She said "the card expires on 18th July so a week on Saturday"
That's why I made the effort to go that day.
Anyway had to spend an extra £5 to renew the card, also ended up over charged by £5 and the surely girl on the till forgot to deduct the 10% DofE extra discount.
I would normally check my receipt but had dragged myself there feeling ill assuming that I would be using a valid discount card.0
