He's listed similar strange 'does not include' things.

Because people are stupid. This is a well known scam on Ebay. List the box of something expensive. Say it does not include the actual item and just the box. Watch the bids roll in. Also works with a TV and Xbox
Ebay will let the buyer win a SNAD but if people are stupid enough to bid on a listing that clearly states you only get the box then I have no sympathy.0 -
I look for things like perfume, though, and know lots of people who look for perfume - they just wouldn't fall for this, no way!
I mean, WHO would fall for this??? It says in the TITLE there's no perfume included!
Plus, seller risks bad f/b from dumbos who might bid - and does he actually get the money for it??
Searching perfume -empty bottles are quite often listed, and I've never come across anyone bidding on one thinking it had perfume in, if 'empty' is in the title!*Look for advice, not 'advise'*

I think, as the OP has said, it is a bit different from the rest of the scams as it says in the title and in big print in the description that there is no perfume and all they are selling is the box. The seller has 100% feedback score for 150items.
Are mates bidding on it for a laugh?0 -
I suppose if you got the box cheap and were a tite person you could buy a copy of the perfume and put it into said box in the hopes your OH does not/is too thick to notice.0

I used to sell my old empty perfume bottles. There was a real market for them.
However, despite listing them in the 'collectables, perfume bottles' section, and clearly stating in both the title and description that they were empty and no perfume was in there, nearly every time at least one bidder would message me to cancel their bid or not pay because 'they didn't realise it was only for the bottle'.
I stopped bothering in the end because it was too much hassle.
I have the same issue with something now that my DH sells. It's a part of something, that is regularly in demand as it often goes missing and the item is more valuable to sell on with it. It is clearly listed as the part in the description and title, the photo only shows the part, and there is an item specific for the part which we always add. However, so many times people seem to think they are getting the whole item it's ridiculous."Good financial planning is about not spending money on things that add no value to your life in order to have more money for the things that do". I've seen somebody selling empty iPhone box, title said empty and also in the description there was a mentioning that no contents included (or something along those lines) and bids were in an excess of £300+! I had reported the listing to eBay but probably by the time they had done anything about it, the winner would've paid.0

eBay do pull these ads if you report them. The ones with disparity between the high bid price and it being an empty box for whatever.Warning: any unnecessary disclaimers appearing under my posts do not bear any connection with reality, either intended, accidental or otherwise. Given how many stupid people there are who don't read my titles and listings, I can believe there will be plenty of people who will buy this believing that they are getting the perfume.Buyers only see what they want to see, not what's there.0

The problem is that people often list the empty box in the category for the actual item. That is why people bid - I think they get blindness, are stupid, or just don't read or a combination of all 3!
I find nearly every 'empty box' listings I see are listed AS the item, rather than an accessory FOR the item - that doesn't help if someone is searching.
And many of these empty box items are clearly scams - the old chestnut was the 'xbox box' - listed in consoles of course!0
