sadly, we do not live in a world where shops are open 9-5 mon-sat only, anymore. things/times move on andwe all have to get used to it I guess. Not a dig, just an observation

It is legal, as long as notice is given to employees (by publishing the new handbook), and the change is not fundamental (e.g. halving someone's salary).

An employer will rarely modify the handbook to such an extent that it would vary a term of the employer's contract, this would be done by a more formal method.

  • perfectly legal. all industries - not just retail - can change various terms and conditions as time goes on. business and business needs change from time to time and there is one magic phrase which covers most situations - 'needs of the business'.

your contract hours can be changed permenantly with a minimum of two weeks notice (may very depending on your employer and length of service) provided your employer can prove it is for the needs of the business.

Whatever the rules and regulations, I would agree that for students who are studying all week and working all weekend that their employer should have some kind of sympathy for them having to work until 9pm on a sunday evening, then having a 1hr 45 minute journey home.
Whats wrong with people these days? doesn't anybody care about anybody else anymore???
As the OP said there are others that would gladly take the overtime meaning that possibly the OP and her partner could finish at normal time.

    Good luck with this. X

business do not care about that no!..course they don't, caring for every staff member in that way does not make their company sail along happily or bring in the money!!

How is the OP being EXPLOITED?

They are being asked to work FOUR HOURS extra, and only once.

Did I miss somewhere in their post about them being made to work in a sweat factory for 2p an hour?!!
