Faint hope but CMOS battery in the Mobo ? Does sound like a failing mobo.

This is something I hadn't thought to try - definitely worth a punt - I'll keep you posted - thanks for the idea.

You wouldn't get a BIOS screen with no processor - generally you would just get the fans running if it's not present.

I'd say motherboard over CPU. My CPU went and my PC would start but no display at all, no BIOS no nothing.

Replaced both motherboard and CPU due to socket type mismatch and worked again fine.

If you decided to replace the motherboard, it may be worth getting a CPU and replacing that too (without knowing the spec of your machine)

Just tried the CMOS battery same error.

Interestingly, without a keyboard attached, the clicking noise just continued endlessly. It sort of sounds a bit like a relay failing to do anything.

I'm beginning to sense that it could be the motherboard and not the cpu.

Which then begs the question is it worth replacing one without the other. It looks like I can get an LG1156 motherboard for about £50, the question is, is it worth it?

ok thanks for answering , I was hoping to find you another (possibly more modern) board/cpu combo at a realistic price .

While I have done it myself it's not recommended to use vacuums near computer components as they can produce static

While I must admit I've done it myself, it's generally recommend not too use vacuums near computer components due to static charge build ups. I suspect that the same is true with dusters

If it were me I'd be inclined to change the CPU and the mobo, might as well get an up to date motherboard with Sata III, PCIe 3.0 and USB 3. All depends on what you have to spend.
