Try moving the router around . I get an additional 20% by placing router on the floor and turned sideways .

    In the SSID I have:

WPA Auto (which I am currently on changing the channels)

    WPA2-PSK(AES)

    WPA/WPA2 Enterprise

Please don't leave this on Auto. Select WPA2-PSK (AES)

One other line of enquiry you might like to try:

While there's a strong chance that the bottleneck is somewhere in your wifi setup, it is not impossible that your local Virgin network is overutilised. It's worth checking before you spend money on a router or other new equipment.

You can set up a broadband monitor at http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/monitors.html
You'll need to set up a free acount and enter the IP address of your VM hub. Then let the monitor run for at least a couple of days and it will ping your connection at regular intervals and display the results as a graph. There is a good explanation of what the graph shows at http://www.thinkbroadband.com/faq/sections/bqm.html.

This can be very informative and it will certainly give you some evidence if you need to go back to Virgin to complain. If the monitor shows that your connection is healthy, it will also confirm that the problem is local to you.

I started to do speed tests and realised that the 5G connection on my phone and tablet was reaching speeds of over 100mb, and occasionally dropping to around 60-80mb. While my laptop, which only connects to 2G, was poor, speeds were ranging from 2mb and less (so barely connecting) to 13mb / 28mb and shooting up to 70mb / 80mb before dropping off completely and losing connection. The same speeds were on my phone when connected to 2G as well. Most of the time though the speeds on 2G my laptop do not go past 6.5mb.

The fact that 5GHz wifi is apparently OK pretty much rules out congestion as the problem. Always worth having a TBB monitor though as VM IPs remain pretty much static for months on end so you can see if your area is becoming congested.

I just thought I would offer a quick update. Been on channel 12 since Friday now and all is well. No drop outs of WiFi at all, and low and behold my laptop is picking up WiFi speeds of between 38 - 42 Mbps yesterday and today. Long may it continue!

My sister had ongoing wifi problems which no one could seem to solve, with the connection dropping in and out all the time. (She is not with VM.) Eventually she was supplied with a more powerful router, one designed for people with old houses (thick walls)/ using the pc someway from the router. (Remember the tv ad with Michael Caine trying to get wifi at the top of a lighthouse?) Neither was true in her case, but even so the "more powerful" router solved the problem.

Speed still steady, only one drop out in a week. I found a driver update from 6.223.215.14 - 31/07/2014 to 7.35.275.2 - 2/7/2015

Current WiFi Speed over 50mb! I'm happy! :j
