I would think that the people who have been banned from the forum hpc.co.uk could pretty well start their own thriving forum.

The only possible answer to this statement is affirmation. Yes it is very strange.
I signed up a few years back only to discover I had to post on a single newbies thread to prove my credentials before getting banned from the wider community such as it is.
I think I might have posted, "Hi, I'm Generali" or some such before thinking that the whole thing was utterly pointless.0 -

Edit - I now remember it was about swaps, it wasn't even anything important. It was just the fact that I'd gainsaid him that earned my ban.
I was still checking in regularly until I sold my house but I came to feel increasingly sorry for many of those posters. Not in a schadenfreude sort of way but real sadness.
There's one in particular poster who has caught my eye over the years. It's just been an emotional roller-coaster for him and I think that site has had a really negative impact on his life. I don't mean to single him out but he embodies the potential impact of that site for me.
When prices were crashing, our friend there was rubbing his hands in glee saying that only a Georgian rectory well set back from the plebs on the streets would do. He was full of hope and ego, really thinking it was coming his way at last and it was all going to pay off. How much cleverer than the man on the street he was because he had waited. He was dismissive of pretty good houses at fairly reasonable prices because he was focused on this narrow band of status homes. After all, nothing else befitted his newfound station in life. He was cocky and sneering with it, which is what drew my attention. I thought he was awful at the time. Now I think it was the atmosphere on that board, egging him on, that created his attitude.
Needless to say, he didnt buy, because no-one rang a bell to say we were at the bottom of the crash, and he now can only despair of generic estate new build prices in his area. He's consumed by bitterness and latches onto any sign of hope which soon gets dashed. Up and down. Up and down.
I truly think that site has put a big blot on his life. Without all that confirmation bias feeding a developing obsession, he would have made a fairly good buy years ago and never given housing another thought, just got on with his life.
That's something you hear quite a lot over there. No matter how affordable houses may get for them as individuals, the particular houses they can afford are never good enough.
I think houses would have to go back to 5 figures for any of that lot to buy, which will never happen.0 -
I've never had a login but do visit on occasion.
There's a chap who sounds perfectly horrible and seems to think people are buying houses at current prices as part of a vendetta of spite aimed at him personally. He wants them to crash and burn and he'll be laughing like a maniac if they do. His posts have become increasingly incoherent.
I'm afraid I can't claim to be without schadenfreude but I do visit less because it's hard to watch him get ever more bitter.0 -
There are persons over there who have had their lives on hold since 2004.0

Sorry for replying to mine own thread but amongst the doom and gloom there is a sticky, yes a sticky running to 600 something pages on buying gold.
you could always read moneyweek if you want to be fully indoctrinated'Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.'

Pots and kettles.
This sub forum only exists because every time someone posted asking for buying advice they were jumped on by people having HPC style arguments about what the housing market was about to do.
This is the weirdest forum on MSE.Been away for a while.0
