Cost of living as a single person ?

HelloI'm just curious to know how much would it roughly cost for a single person to live alone ?
I've just got a new job and have to move from my family home closer to work. I'll be renting private accommodation (1bedroom apartment) I'll be paying full rent and all other expenses but but luckily for me I'm in a part of the UK where I don't have to pay council tax or water charges. I was just wondering if there's anyone else out there who manages to live alone on a minimum wage income ?

Where in the UK do you get free water and not have to pay council tax?!

Living costs will vary wildly. Transport to work? Social life? Loan commitments? Vegetarian? Age of property? I could go on...

It's very difficult. Why no council tax or water charges? Are they included in the rent? Is the gas and electricity separately metered? Can you choose which supplier to go with or is it sub metered and you're stuck on the landlords choice of supplier?

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

It costs in £'s per month the same as the length of this piece of string is, in millimetres.

So you'd be better off asking "how long is a piece of string?"

I am also puzzled by the reference to no water charges or council tax. I doubt that you could afford to rent a 1 bedroom flat on minimum wage anywhere in the UK and certainly not in the South East. I couldn't do it on my salary if I hadn't managed to buy a long time ago. Have you considered renting a room in someone's house as a lodger?

Thanks for your replies. I'm in Northern Ireland and none of those charges have been introduced here.

I did it for a few years, but it was tough and I ran up credit card and overdraft debt to get by.

How much is your rent? Travel costs? Do you run a car? Are you tied in to any expensive outgoings like phone contracts or catalogue payments?

Be very careful, do your sums very thoroughly, several times, before you make any commitments. Allow for the unexpected too.

Thanks for your advice. I don't drive but I travel by public transport. It works out around £20 a week for my travel expenses. I only have my phone out on a contract, it's paid monthly at £23.

How much is your rent? That was really the most important question!

Okay, so I think you pay 'rates' for various public services in Northern Ireland? Just mentioning it as a cost to possibly factor in as no-one's mentioned it so far.
  • Rent a room instead using something like below

    http://www.spareroom.co.uk

That way, you can have a fixed monthly outgoing and still have access to utilities etc like broadband, water, gas etc....

Bear in mind you have less protection than with a tenancy, but rediculously lower costs (and normally gain some friends into the process)
