My Laptop runs Win 8.1 and has 8Gb of RAM - However, according to Speccy - has only 4.8Gb available (of 7.89 total) - I am assuming that this is due to Graphics, but can't see any way to reduce shared memory
So am I wasting 3Gb on graphics ?
Any suggestions ?
The BIOS does not allow me to change it...

im going to assume 64bit, as with 32bit you wouldn't be getting 4.8gb available.

when it says 4.8gb available, is it talking about the total amount of memory available, or whats currently free ?

it sounds like you have 8gb ram, but 3.2gb is currently being used, most likely by windows itself

What does windows itself say ?
also, what does it say is available in task manager

Yes - 64bit and the Windows just reports 8.0Gb of RAM !!
Where can I discover the amount of RAM shared with video in Windows itself ?
the task manager shows 4.8Gb of useable ram

Its not clear to me what figures you are quoting. This is task manager output for my Win 8.1 64bit laptop with 4GB physical memory. Post up your equivalent and point out which value you are querying. Shared graphics memory isn't going to be multi GB

These are the Speccy figures on the same machine...
    RAM
    Memory slots
    Total memory slots 2
    Used memory slots 1
    Free memory slots 1
    Memory
    Type DDR3
    Size 4096 MBytes
    Channels # Single
    DRAM Frequency 798.2 MHz
    CAS# Latency (CL) 11 clocks
    RAS# to CAS# Delay (tRCD) 11 clocks
    RAS# Precharge (tRP) 11 clocks
    Cycle Time (tRAS) 28 clocks
    Command Rate (CR) 1T
    Physical Memory
    Memory Usage 77 %
    Total Physical 3.89 GB
    Available Physical 891 MB
    Total Virtual 7.89 GB
    Available Virtual 3.44 GB
    SPD
    Number Of SPD Modules 1
    Slot #1

If it's the number in RED above that is just memory you are not currently using at all. Not all that surprising if all you have open is a browser and Speccy.

what it sounds like is Windows has carved out a chunk of memory (3.2Gb) and reserved this for the OS use only.

You are seeing what is left of the RAM available (4.8Gb) to other programs.

No you aren't wasting any memory. If there was 3GB of shared memory for graphics Windows would not even see it so Windows would say the total RAM was 5GB of RAM total.

The computer just has 3GB of stuff in the RAM. That's just normal.
  • Control Panel>System.

    Look at Installed memory (RAM):

It'll give a total figure and, in brackets, a usable figure.

    Mine's 6.00 GB (5.21 GB usable)

    > Mine is 8.00 Gb (7.89Gb usable)
    So probably 128MB usedfor graphics
    > Available Physical 5.27 GB
    and 5.27GB currently unused.

Start an additional browser or some other program and the second number will fall.

All it is really saying is that you didn't need 8GB of memory unless you regularly do something more memory intensive with your machine than you are right now.
