Which Emulsion Paint?

We need to paint all our upstairs (after certain DIY jobs have been finished) and were wondering which matt emulsion members recommend. I would like the best of the cheapest!
I have searched the site and seen problems with B&Q paint and seen good reviews on Wickes paint.
Thank you :)

Leyland or Dulux Trade. Both available from trade warehouses, generally not in DIY sheds.

I would recommend Dulux but avoid Crown. We recently painted the dining room with Crown 'Summer Daze' and after 2 coats it still hadn't managed to cover the magnolia underneath. I looked like I had painted over black! Had to buy a tin of Dulux 'Lemon Tropics' to finish the job.

Has anyone an opinion on Wilkinson paint? I did see somewhere that it had good reviews?
  • I find Wilkinson's (Wilko's) paint to be variable - sometimes good & covers well but sometimes very poor. (Like started to happen with Dulux IMHO.)
This last year or two I've used Johnstones paints & these cover well without being the extortionate price of Dulux or Crown.
Sold (where I am) in B&M stores and a few independents.

Am I right in saying Wickesonly do two 'trade' emulsions, white and magnolia? If so what is their other emulsions like please?
  • I was referring to standard Wilkinsons emulsions, NOT the "trade" tubs.
With those ("trade") , again over the past few years I've used Johnstones - because the Dulux I used to swear by became very variable in quality, which was a shame because I used to get 5l for £10 in Asda.

I've tried cheaper ones, but always end up going back to dulux. It covers better than anything else I've tried, and it's tough so it lasts. I think it's money and time saving.

Dulux endurance all the way, we've got kids and white wall on the stairs - covers well and withstands scrubbing on a monthly basis. The only problem I've ever had with any dulux was when we bought the light and space range for a dark room - it had terrible coverage and showed every mark .
