Returning student - student loan arrears help please

Options
Back in 1996 I went to uni but 4 years of loans later due to health and other personal circumstances did not complete my degree

In 2006 I got a letter from GP and copies of my indefinite DLA award and supposedly had the debt wiped out. However. Last year letter from Erudio giving arreArs and balance. Coving 3 years of loans. I don't have the original SLC paperwork but am certain all the student loans were wiped out.

Recently I resent current indefinite DLA award notice High rate care and high rate notability along with another letter from my GP stating that I will be unfit for any kind of work for at least another 3 years. I've until at least 2018. And that then I may not be fit for any kind of work. Erudio are asking that GP States that I will be permanently unfit for work however GP is unwilling to do that as she says things however unlikely may change. I would like to study part time again doing Open University but do not think I can get funding as I am in arrears although it should have been all wiped out.

Can anyone help with getting the arrears sorted out and also secondly with future funding. For an OU degree

Many thanks.

I'm a little confused OP - you expect them to write off your previous loans and then give you a whole new set of loans? Are you planning to pay anything towards the new ones, or will you be expecting them to write them off as well?

I don't expect anything. I asked a question because they wrote part of it off when under there own rules it should have all been written off. I am trying to better myself nothing more. I asked a couple of points hopefully for answers not a judgement

Please ignore them, they have attitude issues. I don't know how to address your question given that I have no experience of the area myself. My advice would be to wait for one of the more worthy posters to come along and address your question-- maybe ask on the student room too.

No need to ask, I'll just appear when I have time! Unfortunately, that's not as often at the moment.

Did you receive any form of qualification from the previous course, for example a CertHE?

Usually, a student in arrears would be disqualified from further finance, but yours is an odd case in all honesty. It's not one I've come across, so will need to look into it further.

Hi, this is quite a complex one because most of the rules and regulations regarding this relate to courses that started after 2009.

Normally, as you successfully completed 3 years (I'm making the assumption that you were doing a 4 year full time course), you won't get those back. But the 4th one where you dropped out due to ill health could be claimed back using their 'compelling personal reasons' application.

Part time funding works a little differently, you get 16 years funding overall (obviously tuition fees only, no maintenance loans). So you will have lost 3-4 years of your 16 year entitlement. So you may still be able to do your course part time and have 12 years to complete it, but if you're getting letters about owing SLC money then that will complicate the application (whether you actually owe or not).

The other slight complication is whether you have already studied at a level equivalent or lower than the one you will start at. If you received no qualification, then this really shouldn't be a problem for you.

If you're looking to start with the OU from October then I'd strongly advise applying and seeing what you get back from SFE, as that is the only way you'll know for sure where your finance situation stands. Be prepared to send off all medical evidence and covering letters explaining your situation and what you intend to do from this point forwards.
