Hi
I have a VW Golf (57-plate). Last weekend the key/alarm fob stopped working. I replaced the battery - thinking that was the problem.
Simply replacing the battery did not work so I have tried to re-program using instructions in the manual and YouTube videos - no luck
.
Can anyone help/direct - I have a spare that I am using at the moment.
Thanks

The fob itself could be faulty, my MK5 fob was still on the original battery nearly 9 years later.0

Has been working for 7 years - what would now cause a fault! Btw the little red light flashes when a button is pressed?0

Get in touch with a local mobile key cutting guy and perhaps arrange to meet up with them at one of their jobs/their base and attempt to reprogram the key.
Would probably save a bit you going to them.
If they cant reprogram, they'll make you up a new one.0 -

This won't work they they don't have the security code to reprogram the fob. Only the main VW dealership can do this. You will need to go to them or a VW specialist who'll order a new fob (if its damaged) from Germany and they can program0 -

This only applies to the immobiliser (transponder in the key) the remote locking is a different system and is separate to the immobiliser.
A fob can be programmed using diagnostic software such as VCDS. It's usually done by accessing the convenience unit 46, adaptation 10, erasing all fobs through channel 000 and adding them through channel 001. It can also be checked through the measuring blocks to see if the convenience unit is seeing a signal.0 -

Another bit of nonsense from Dark matter, I see.
OP, this is rubbish. Join one of the VAG forums and look for a local member with VCDS if needs be - although you should be able to program the fob without, to be honest.0 -

Poppycock. This only applies to the immobiliser (transponder in the key) the remote locking is a different system and is separate to the immobiliser.
My spare couldn't open the car. When using it to start the car,
it would fire up, but then cut out immediately (immobiliser kicking in?). The guy got it working again.0 -
If the OP's fob is actually damaged then he/she has NO choice but to go to the main dealer/VW specialist to order a new fob and get it programmed by them!
If it isn't damaged then yeah it can be reprogrammed by anyone0 -

I'd hacksawed through the chip trying to remove it from the working key fob to recase it and managed to break part of the circuit board as well.
So again, poppycock.0 -

Darkmatter, that is rubbish.
If it still starts the car, another fob can be programmed, as above, using VCDS as a last resort, and should be possible without. The chip can be swapped.
Even if it doesn't start the car, VCDS can do it, and plenty of us have access to that.
Dealers do not need to be involved. Once again, I'd suggest keeping your advice to yourself when it is incorrect.0
