Most of mine are over £25 so back to Royal Mail for me.

No printing labels and no losing a day waiting for them to collect.

An increase from £2.78 to £4.98 is frankly ridiculous. One extreme to the other.

Why not a midway compensation point of £50 for say £1.10 (like signed for)?

I dont need £100 and i wont pay for it.

Signed for assuming you can get it into a small parcel size will be fine at £3.90 2nd class, but watch anything that doesn't have one side smaller than 16 cms as if it creeps into Medium parcel it is going to cost you £5.99.

It is the size issue for me that means I will probably stick with MyHermes.

Yeah if size is an issue ill will still use them. But most are small parcel size.

Insurance is only an issue for Hermes IF they provide a bad service.

E.g ive sent over 500 items and claimed just £6 back.

So the extra cover has cost Hermes zilch - but given me peace of mind.

Now they have lost a 500+ parcels a year customer - which WILL cost them.

As i say, one extreme to the other. I could risk it, as i have had so few problems with them. But if Hermes believe in their service - then compensation should be a rarity rather than the norm - and as such not a big issue.

The move suggests they have lots of claims.

I wondered that, but then it occurred to me that its a nifty way to get people to pay for extra insurance.

I imagine people sending a 35 pound item will get panicked into buying the extra insurance, so they will be paying more for sending then previously with the 50 limit.

I think it's just a form of social engineering to sell more insurance.

I know what is important to me, the answer is both, I was getting ample compensation and a tracked service.

This new development means huge increase of £2.20 for the same service.

and if youre sending a 2-5kg parcel this has increased to £5.79 from £5.28 too!

Hi All. I just went to buy a label for something under 1 kg and less than £25 in value.
Not happy that my transaction total came to £3.78 after I had paid for it, it seems that it is defaulting to "signiture required" for an extra £1 when there is no need for one.
If it's something to do with my settings or if anyone else has changed this default, please reply, other heads up...cancelling labels and getting a refund takes a while I seem to remember.
    Thanks Soolin!

I suspect you have ticked something in your account as none of mine are defaulting to signature required. Had quite a run on large items today so have had to use Myhermes quite a bit.

My problem with the new compensation levels is that if you opt to pay the extra £1 for an item that is worth, say £40, you are then over-insured and yet previously if you declared a higher value they may have argued that you had over-insured and refused to pay out.

But having paid the extra £1 for that peace of mind they then insist that the item must be signed for and add another £1 for a signature! So it is now £2 extra on the base price.

I also got caught on their new international service. Thought I'd give it a go as the base price quoted was £14.47 so I charged the buyer based on that. However when I started booking there was a 30p increase for doorstep collection (I don't have a parcel shop close) so now it was £14.77. I carried on booking it anyway even though a bit miffed but then when I came to payment I was suddenly on a page headed Parcel2Go and the total was £15.07 as they had charged me 2% for using Paypal! Hermes don't charge which is one reason I use them rather than P2G and even though I have scanned the help pages I can see no reference anywhere to a company switch or Paypal charge. Also the compensation dropped from the measly £25 to a measlier £20 so I won't be using their international again as Interparcel offer £50 for only a little less on the cost. I wrote to Hermes regarding both issues and have had this reply which doesn't really give an explanation as to why I am being charged £1 twice.....

""In reference to your first point regarding the extra cost for the signature. Obtaining a signature is an additional service which instructs the courier they cannot deliver the parcel without a signature being obtained, thus an additional charge is applied. To take out compensation an extra charge is applicable and therefore must be signature obtained. This is required so that we can ensure the parcel is delivered and signed for by the recipient should there be a need for a claim.

Moving on to your second point regarding the international delivery service. To opt for a courier collection there is an additional charge of 30p which is only applied to the total cost as it is an additional service that is optional for the sender of the parcel to opt for.

In regards to your issue with parcels2go I can only apologise for any inconvenience that has ben caused to yourself when using this service prior to this occasion however all of hermes international parcels are dealt with through parcels2go which is clearly stated on the website.""

And for the life of me I cannot find this information under any heading on their website. Maybe I am missing something but if it is there it is well buried!!

I've never used MyHermes for eBay parcels, always RM and in 13 years only had about 2 parcels go missing out of perhaps over 2000. I've thought of MyHermes but am put off by the whole having to be in when a courier calls. I've stuck with RM and after reading comments on here will continue with RM!

I don't think this is a worry. Insurance if often sold as cover in bands of value. If you wanted to claim they would check that you had paid for 20-50 pounds of cover and then ask for evidence of the actual value of the item you are sending.

A bigger problem is the huge list of items excluded from cover. In many cases you are effectively sending at your own risk and there is no point of buying extra insurance that will never pay out. RM has far fewer exclusions.

When I send items with myHermes I never pay for the signature. However, when I check tracking it almost always says "signature obtained".
