USA Citizenship - Need advice

  • i would agree with a previous poster (to be honest i don't entirely know and it's really for you to do your homework) that you will be entering the US as a UK citizen under the visa waiver programme and then are going to go down the citizen route....it probably isn't a problem but may arouse extra questions...also my understanding would be that certain verification would have to come from your mother and you would need to see how that pans out with you being in separate countries...i'd search for better advice than can be found on here ....it's a very important decision to take and you need to know of the disadvantages as well
    good luck anyway

...What i do know is, it is hard to get Green card for the states, very hard. Nationality is my best bet, i hope i can master the application process, and affordably.

Well you ain't read anything... it has taken me less than 2 minutes to find this
    • An applicant must have been lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence.
    • Has resided continuously as a lawful permanent resident in the U.S. for at least 5 years prior to filing with no single absence from the United States of more than one year;

so... to be able to "Naturalize" which is citizenship, you have to be a permenant resident.. so that means you have to become a perm resident, aka green card...

this is incorrect. I looked into it today a little. The US embassy class you as a citizen if you have an American parent...ironically, it is just hard to become one :-D. With the 5years, i read something about this also, i think this refers to my Mother. One of the requirements in the mammoth application form i have states that the parent has to have been residnet in the USA 5years before/after they were 15....or something along those lines. Its a shame the Embasy couldnt offer me more help. I wrote to them and explained my situation and all they sent back was the application formand confusing stipulations concerned with myself and my parent.

...Professional helps the way to go, & i have no time to do this here :-(

    Hi Pazza2000
I am actually a dual US/UK citizen though I was born American and became a British Citizen through marriage and living in the UK for 3 years. It is more difficult to get American citizenship but it wouldnt be impossible if you meet the requirements.
Have you tried looking at British Expats site? Their website is http://www.britishexpat.com/expatforum/general/index.php

Its a free forum that might be able to answer some of your questions.
I belong to a website called American Expats but they charge $15 a year for membership. They are full of knowledge but you might want to try the British Expats first.
Wish you all the best :) Immigration is very tough and there are allot of hoops to jump through but I would not change a thing. I am happy to be American by birth and British by choice :D

    Hello pazza,
Id be happy to post your siyuation on American Expats. There is bound to be someone in similar circumstances.
The "hoops" I was talking about are more from my own personal situation with immigration to the UK but from what I understand it is the same in the US. You will find it will b time consuming and they will want loads of paperwork and every t crossed and every i dotted. Nothing to really worry about as long as you meet the requirement.
I will post the question on the other board and see what others have to say :)
  • FWIW We are dual citizens - the US requirement to renounce foreign citizenship was nullified years ago by a US Supreme Court decision. That said, it was a right pain getting my wife US citizenship even though she was entitled to it both by virtue of her parents naturalising as US Citizens when she was under 18 and her marriage to me (a US Citizen). Be prepared for some serious bureaucracy!! My wife had to attend an interview in person with her US citizen father within the USA. I disagree with those who say it isn't worth it. Once you have it, it's a valuable tool that can't be taken away unless you join Al Qaeda or some nonsense. Go for it if you are entitled to it!!
    :D

I have posted your information on American Expats and they suggest you strat here http://www.usembassy.org.uk/cons_new/acs/passports/robirth.html

I have had a look and if you follow the link it says if your parent meets the Transmission Requirements for U.S. Citizenship then you are to write to the Embassy with all your details and they will tell you where to go from there and if you are eligable.
    Hope that helps :)
    Good luck!

That won't be any help, it's for US Citizens who want to bring their wives/husbands or parents/children to the US via K1 or K3 visas. The OP's situation is completely different.
