    The Ombudsman often looks at whether the policyholder was being dishonest or not, and to decide that they'll look at the surrounding circs.


    Fundamentally, disclosures are about having an honest held belief rather than it being factually true or false (even though insurance are not to the same extent 'contracts of good faith' as they were previously).

    Don't forget, the policy that was cancelled may not have been cancelled in such a way as to need to be declared.

    The last 3 people I know who had car insurance policies cancelled, had them cancelled by the company, but the company issued a cancellation letter stated 'policy cancelled by policyholder'. thus no need to declare this.

    7 years no claims , another £40 a year to protect . Worth it?
  • Which raises a wider issue of what constitutes "cancellation"? There's a clear difference between policyholder having their insurance cancelled through failed direct debits and the like, versus clear dishonest failure to declare point/accidents and so on.

    Perhaps Inside Insurance could shed light on this?

    In my brave new world, I should be able to claim against people whose car breaks down, blocks the road and causes me long delays. Or people who have accidents that are by nature someone's fault but not mine, that again cause me serious inconvenience.

    £7k sounds cheap.

    Get on the phone to your new insurers and ask them, and get onto your old insurers. If you don't get a sensible response then you should make a formal complaint against your old insurers, which may then get bumped up to the FCA.

    The FCA would not get involved
