Calls to 0500 numbers are not free.
The pricing reforms introduced by Ofcom on 1 July 2015 made calls to 0800 and 0808 numbers free from mobile phones. Several mobile networks still appear to be charging for these numbers in which case callers should complain both to the network and to Ofcom.
Calls to 0500 numbers remain chargeable on most mobile networks. Ofcom's new rules did not apply to 0500 numbers. Instead, and as previously announced in June 2014, Ofcom is phasing out all 0500 numbers by 3 June 2017. All existing users have been offered the matching 0808 5 number for migration. The new number is one digit longer than the old number. The new number retains the final six digits of the old number, e.g. 0500 123456 becomes 0808 512 3456. If you regularly call 0500 numbers, keep an eye open for any announcements about a change of number.
