The Scot Power one that I am looking at present has Standing charge of 20p and unit rate of 3.31p
I am currently paying 9.45p and 2.975p inc VAT so that tariff is not that impressive.

Iran is about to unleash more oil onto the world.
    Sanction about to end.

The magical £999 tariff fixed for three years is tantalisingly close.

There is no 'cheapest': it depends on usage and region.

Absolutely. I've been with Npower for several years and despite the problems some have, I've never had an issue with them. Npower are the cheapest of the big 6 in my region based on our usage, currently about £680 a year. (there is only me and the wife). Yes, I can currently save about £19 a year with one of the small independent suppliers, but I figure with all of the hassle of doing that (I'm not bothered about saving less than 30 quid a year) I may as well do what I've been doing for the last few years, monitoring Npower closely and switching when necessary, after all, it's free to switch and I'm not locked into any of their tariffs. I'm on my fourth switch with Npower since November last year and I'm saving money, indeed, I've saved a lot of money. I couldn't ever forsee me going to British Gas unless their prices went through the floor and I can't see that happening anytime soon.

I'm just stunned at the apathy of some people though. I convinced a work colleague recently to switch tariffs because he hadn't done so for literally years and he saved nearly £300 a year based on his current useage.

I use Ebico for gas, no standing charge. Bliss at this time of year not paying for gas through the back door.

Not so blissful for many in winter if you do not have the freedom to switch on the heating as often as needed (or as wanted). The chances of the pro rata contribution to service charges not exceeding the standing charge is pretty small (yes, just 'for many' not 'for all'). There are tariffs with £30 or £50 annual charges that are cheaper than Ebico's.

Comparing my gas tariff the break even point for Ebico is 1700 kWh at £85 (or 3 weeks peak winter use) per year so the massive majority would be far worse off using them. It does not become the cheapest available until down to 1410 kWh pa and then is equal to another SC supplier and only £7 per year cheaper than my tariff. Do not be fooled into thinking that not paying a SC when not using any gas is actually saving money.
  • Morning all,

Yesterday British Gas told me the cut in gas prices does not apply to Sainsbury's Energy customers. However this morning, Sainsbury's Energy got in touch to confirm that it does apply to Sainsbury's Energy customers on its standard tariff only. It does not have a similar tariff to British Gas's Fix & Fall tariff. The news story has been updated with this information.

    Kind regards, MSE Paloma

I've used 5949 KWh in the last 12 months.

For my tariff that would cost £211 and with Ebico £309, 46% dearer. Use a comparison site and see how much you could save.
