Divided the saving and she is gone crazy...

Hello,

I just want your opinion to understand if I am really a bad man or whether it is totally acceptable.

Since I could not trust her anymore, I split in half the saving pot we had and cancelled the overdraft. I took half and left her half.
I have done that last week after officializing our separation...however, she only realized it today and she went berserk on the phone so did her mum a couple of hours later!

It's not like if I emptied the bank account... and ran away, I split it in two equal shares!

Was it really out of order?

Cheers

Not knowing your situation it's hard to judge too much. BUT, if no kids are involved, and you both paid equal amount into the savings then I don't see a problem with halving it

Not at all...but write down how and why you calculated it for later reference. Half the amounts in the joint accounts is yours so you can take it and send the other half to her personal current account then close the joint account. Either account holder can close the account.
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

Did you first pay off half the debts?

Did you contribute to the savings? Have you got children?
  • I contributed to every single penny of this saving... plus paying for her car, the holidays, etc...
She has a 60GBP or so monthly payment for her car balance on Credit card @ 0%; whereas I still have 6-7k on my car loan.

We have no joint debt except the HUGE mortgage, which she can't afford. Hence, why I want to house sold.

She put the account overdraft overnight by withdrawing everything remaining, not thinking of bills, etc. so it comforts me in my decision.

If its a joint account then you are equally liable for the overdraft repayment and any fees that come as a result. If she is not working then you might be an easier target for the bank and find yourself paying the lot back...

It would have been preferable to have let her know, if not before splitting the funds, then at least as soon as you had withdrawn the money.

What do you mean by 'officialising' your separation? have you had a Separation Agreement drawn up?
