  • Have a look here it is a list of all the vegetarian, vegan, gluten free and lactose free products in Aldi, which is by far the cheapest for these products.

My son was diagnosed Non Coeliac Gluten Sensitive 3 and a half years ago at age 6 and a half. We promised him then that we weren't going to let it get in the way of things and thanks to Mr Google and the fact that I cook from scratch mostly anyway we've mostly managed. Again we're lucky as he can tolerate a wee bit of cross contamination. You'd be amazed how many things are gluten free naturally and that includes a lot of ready stuff from the shops. Some of the main changes for us included:

Cutting back on the amount of pasta we ate which allows us all to have the GF stuff. Asda is the cheapest and it's nice
Swapping to Knorr stock cubes which are GF and Bisto Best Gravy (a great find for those special roast dinners!)
checking labels minutely. Asda are particularly good for using corn and potato starch instead of wheat starch.
Getting Phil Vickery's GF baking book. The vanilla cupcakes are great and there's a celebration cake recipe which is good for birthday cakes.
    Using polenta to "crumb" things
Gram flour is GF so pakoras etc are easy and cheap to make.

Even in the last 3 and a half years GF products have improved, a lot have come down in price and are much easier to get. All of M&S's sausages and many burgers etc are GF and the same price as the regular ones. Asda Extra Special ones are too and they have bog standard GF sausages too. Sainsburys have a few too.

All the supermarket websites have pages of allergy info which lists everything they do that is GF. It's time consuming at first but it pays off. You just have to check labels in case they change a recipe. Restaurants also have to give you this now and many have GF menus which they'd print off for you. It's much more doable than we thought it would be.

I'm wheat intolerant so tend to mostly eat food which doesn't naturally have wheat in it. I do buy gluten free bread and pasta. Most recipes I find online have ingredients I can't find locally. Thanks FOnz for the recipes. Have checked the first couple and they look good. I'll check the rest tomorrow.

As a lifelong DF (allergy to lactose), I can honestly say that the main problem with free from diets is when you try and make things containing dairy with DF ingredients. There's plenty of foods out there, all of which taste lovely, and contain nothing which will make you sick.

You have to try things as you would if you were eating a whole new cuisine or diet, some things you would love, and other things you hate - fake cheese is the worst, although the progress on lactose free milk has been fabulous over the last 30 years. Its a complete diet change, so you won't eat what you used to eat.

Does anyone have advice for catering for my lactose intolerant grandson and his vegan girlfriend, both nineteen, and coming to stay next week for 10 days? I have some ideas but could do with more. No gluten problem, thank goodness. We are carnivorous but one of us has type 2 diabetes.

She drinks rice milk - this looks easy to make looking at on-line recipes but the result is so disgusting in flavour and texture I can't believe anyone would like it, so I threw it away.

I, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today. I can choose which it shall be. Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn't arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and I'm going to be happy in it. :)
