Do you still use these when flying? I'm reading mixed reports on whether they're still necessary. Thanks

Anything that identifies your bag from all of the other black or red bags on the belt is a good thing.0

a coloured ribbon on the handle and or a brightly coloured strap around the case for me
means i can see case as soon as it appears on the carousel0 -
They are not strictly necessary, but useful to have something that can be used to identify your bag in the event of the airline tag coming off. I don't check bags often, but if I do, I mostly use tags provided by my credit card protection policy, which don't identify me. Failing that, I put only my surname and mobile number on the tag.0

My Tripp suitcase has a small pouch on the back for a luiggage label.
I put my outbound details in then swap to inbound when we're coming home.
I also put a card with our contact details on the inside of the case.
AFAIK, the barcode labels put on at check-in can identify your case but I like to be sure.
My case is pretty bright, something like htis only brighter:
so I can see it as soon as it hits the carousel but I do like to put some unique identifyer on just in case someone has the same case.
Apparently Tripp change the design of their fabric cases pretty regularly.0 -
Haven't used tags lately for security reasons, but wish I had done last night when an entire batch of luggage was late going onto the carousel at Heathrow. Then it hit me that the airline would have no way of identifying my bag and contacting me. So... back to using the outbound hotel adress and home address for the return leg.0

I have written the first 3 letters of my name in permanent ink on each edge of the cases, front back and sides.0

My best ever travel purchase was the luggage strap with my name woven through it! There's no way that someone could have identical name and identical bag! Long ago I had to identify my luggage in the secure baggage place at Harare airport as my flight was altered. As they say, easy peasy- it certainly had my name on it - red strap, yellow letters.

£8.50 each (& p+p I think) .. but if you buy 4 or more only £5.50 ( and no, they don't have to be the same name!!) make great gifts for friends who travel a lot.
(I still have a luggage tag on the outside , with full details inside the case- strap also stops the luggage having a popped open moment)Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!

The bar code gives the passenger name, seat number, flight details, etc but it doesn't give your contact details. That can only be retrieved from the booking / ticketing system, which is held on s different system to protect the privacy of passengers.
My OH operates the bag tracking system at Heathrow and says the process would be far simpler if your contact number is attached to your bag on a seperate tag. In hindsight, as his bag was more delayed than mine, he would have preferred to have attached a contact number tag and will be doing so in future.
It took me a few minutes to convince him not to phone work to ask the guys what was going on. Knowing his luck, they'd have dragged him in on a night shift0 -
I use fluorescent gaffer tape to make my bag easily spotable on the conveyor - works a treat :-)0
