Has anyone been to Amsterdam? We won't be flying so are wondering whether to do train and ferry or Eurostar.

Are there any sites that you would recommend? We know we'll want to travel up to the coast too.

    Thank you.

The train/ferry combination ticket is legendary as a great travel bargain. You will probably find details on the site Man in Seat 61. Otherwise you get a Eurostar ticket with an extra ten pounds for the journey to Amsterdam.

I am currently commuting between Amsetrdam and London, and highly recommend the trains. Yes you have to change in Brussels, but the connections are good and the Thalys (Brussels - Amsterdam portion) is very good. Has internet etc. onboard. Eurostar trains are older now, but do the business.

As mentioned, buying one through ticket is much cheaper than 2 seperate ones. Only issue (for me any way) is that you can pick your seat on Eurostar, but not on Thalys.

Total journey is usually around 5 hours.

If you want to spend some time in Brussels you can also use the non high speed trains from Brussels to Amsterdam. Booking in advance will be cheaper, but once I rocked up on the day and paid €45 single which is not the end of the world compared to British trains. There are no seat reservations on these intercity trains, and it takes a little over 3 hours. They do get busy, but if you are starting in Brussels there's no problem in getting a seat.

Thank you for all the replies. It is now booked! For anyone else, I recommend booking early as I got the last cabin on one voyage :-/

We are going from Liverpool St station to Harwich (train) then an overnight crossing to Hoek van Holland. Another train into Amsterdam.

I booked a cheap hotel which (by chance) is right by the Vondelpark where we can cycle and go geocaching (me plus 12 and 14 year old). We are going to pop to the seaside at Zandvoort on the train too.

Will go to the Rijksmuseum also.
