Amsterdam

Has anyone been to Amsterdam? We won't be flying so are wondering whether to do train and ferry or Eurostar.

Are there any sites that you would recommend? We know we'll want to travel up to the coast too.

Thank you.

Yes I've been, I found the Heineken brewery tour interesting, don't know if that's your thing. There's Anne Frank's house museum.

What are you both interested in ?

I found the citizens of Amsterdam really nice, everyone spoke english.

Is your OH/partner interested in football ? Theres the Ajax stadium, can get a stadium tour.

Don't miss Ann Franks house, lots of art galleries, canals to wander along.
For the city centre you really don't need a car.
Seem to be different city travel cards! I would recommend a canal boat trip- there used to be a HOHO canal boat....
I think it is a very interesting city with lots to do and see

Lovely Italian food and singing waiters!!

The Rijksmuseum has only recently been reopened after refurbishment. It was good before so definitely worth a visit.

We'll be there for 2 nights. Looks like we'll be going on the ferry overnight so will get to Amsterdam by about 10am.

Superbreaks do some really good packages. We did the ferry from Hull, included a luxury coach transfer, day in Amsterdam for £79. Ours was a tribute band themed crossing Take That, Westlife, Michael Bubble and Robbie Williams. My friend is doing a 2 night hotel stay in November with the ferry and transfer and that's only £83pp.

    Thank you.

Eurostar does not yet serve Amsterdam direct: you'll need to change trains in Brussels. Direct services should start within the next two years.

I understand the no flying but for me it would be a 50 minute flight from a regional airport at around £60 return.
How much do you want to pay and how long will your journey take?

I did this journey many years ago when a student - train to London - coach to Dover - ferry to Calais - coach to Amsterdam.
That took 16 hours (long before low cost airlines and Euro tunnel!) - never again!
  • And don't miss the coffee shops. Those cakes are lovely and you can see the people who have been there when walking around, they're the only ones smiling.
