  • Have you got parcel tape? Or sellotape or masking tape? I sometimes wrap parcels in a plastic carrier bag - padded if need be with bubble wrap or shredded paper or newspaper or even more carrier bags etc - and then done up securely with tape - mind you, plastic carrier bags are harder to come by these days! Also, I save and reuse post bags, bubble wrap, boxes etc that have been sent to me. Write the address on with a sharpie - or sellotape on a label. You can also cut down a cardboard box to fit - small/"green" mail order companies quite often do this.

I'm sure there are other Threads around (this is where the Board Guides - bless 'em - will go off & post links etc!) but the sort of 'being prepared' stuff I always have in, non food / cleaning etc, is....

    Brown Paper
    Wrapping paper
sellotape / pretty strings etc / normal string
spare birthday cards & some blank generic ones
    sewing kit
    a non-colour shoe shine
    plant food
general type bithday gifts (wine, smellies, notelets etc)
    notepaper & envelopes
bulbs (for those hard to get things like my bedside lights, Xmas tree lights etc)
    spare fuses (a selection)
    Duck tape - or similar
    pritt stick
batteries (ikea cheapies) for clocks & remotes
    torch / cycle light
candles - to see by, not just 'pretties'
matches (coz your lighter will always run out of gas!)
screwdrivers to hand (eg - in kitchen drawer not down the cold, dark shed!)
    Elastic

I'm sure others will add more....

good list, I'd add stamps, both 2nd class for non urgent things and 1st class for the things I've forgotten! Also printer cartridges and various sizes of envelopes.

Much cheaper to hold a stock of "useful stuff" than have to drive 7 miles each way to the nearest semi decent shop and I avoid spending additional money at the same time!

I'd add Araldite to the list as well - I've just glued the falling-off soles back on my trainers. Another tip about being organised for repairs is always to keep a couple of needles threaded up with black and white cotton in your sewing things. That means that you are much more likely to do running repairs before they get much worse. Try it, it works!
