I agree with C-Q, I couldn't ditch the milk if it had only been opened 24 hours. Mind you my boys go through a 4 pinter everyday. But its perfectly fine for 3-4 days if stored in the fridge.

Do the sniff test if in doubt ;)

LOL! That's how we define whether it's still drinkable or not if it's been open a few days :D

Tesco milk has a use by of well over a week away and as previously posted if you keep it in the fridge and don't gulp from the carton it will last 5 days once opened. I buy 12-15 pts once a week, never run out and if I'm not using it as quick as expected I slam a couple of cartons in the freezer to prolong their life even further.

Maybe it's just the milk we get off the milkman that's a little sniffy the morning after we've opened it. Maybe the milkman doesn't use as many preservatives as Tesco. But skimmed milk, in a bottle, off the milkman, once it's been opened, generally stinks by the next day.

If we can get the bigger bottles and they last longer, we'll save even more.

I think you'll find that most milk in your area will be processed at the same place, unless its farm milk and then it will be stated 'bottled on the farm' that will be less processed. But all major stores and local deliveries are from the same place, its the packaging thats the difference and the cost of delivery (milkman) or collection (yourself) that dictates the price.

It could well be due to temperature fluctuation in the milk delivered by your milkman, from it being collected by or delivered to him, then out on the van during deliveries and left on your doorstep before arriving in the fridge. This will definitely affect the shelf life of your milk.

If he's working for a large dairy co-op then the milk he sells will be the same as Tesco sells, just in a different package. I don't know whether farms still operate a bottling and delivery process, the old green top milk, but that doesn't tend to last more than a day or two as it's unpastuerised.

Yes, CQ (and sorry, I seem to have spelled Queen with a C yesterday!), I think you're probably right.

Our milkman is very good, getting here at 3.30am some mornings but never later than 5.30am - we were lucky to get milk for our tea at our old place, let alone in time for breakfast. But the milk can be left to fry on the step some mornings, although not for long (depends on the sun). I bet that's the problem. In which case, we will be able to save tons more by getting the bigger bottles from Tesco and sticking them straight in the fridge when we get in.
