July is Scams Awareness Month and we're working with Citizens Advice to help prevent people falling foul to the scams around at the moment.

As part of it we're holding a Twitter Q&A with Citizens Advice 11am on Wednesday (15 July) on the #scamaware hashtag

Regarding telephone scams and nuisance calls...

TPS changed their premium rate 0845 number over to a cheaper 0345 number in October 2015. It seems that message hasn't got through to very many people involved in this project as the old number is still being promoted by CAB and others.

Additionally, texts to the TPS 78070 number are non-inclusive and cost "one standard rate message". A replacement number was introduced on 2 June 2016. The new number is 85095 and messages are free. This is also under-promoted.

There are a number of messages warning people to beware of premium rate numbers starting 09. There seems to be a distinct lack of awareness that premium rate numbers start 070, 076, 084, 087, 090, 091, 098 and 118 as well as five-digit mobile shortcodes.
