Finally a bit of sense -now all they have to do, is explain the system to Spanish/Portuguese/Greek...... car hire firms:rotfl:0

Just got back from Mallorca where I hired a car at the airport. The rental co didn't ask for anything, which TBH is great, as I forgot to get the code prior to going. I don't know which companies are asking for this code. I rented in march in Lanzarote too and both times they only asked for the pink photo card, nothing else.0

When hiring a car at non-UK locations, are holders of driving licences from countries asked to produce their driving record? I don't think so.
For example, a Spanish hire car company wouldn't ask a German driving licence holder for his driving record. Therefore why would the same Spanish company ask a UK driving licence holder for his driving record?0 -
was told by Avis at Shannon Airport that the old licences are like gold dust and I should get it laminated, the DVLA are causing them no end of problems.0

I forgot to say, last time I hired a car from Hertz at Stansted, yes they needed the code ... I had read about it on MSE and so I had been to the direct.gov website and applied for a code about 65 hours before I hired - so the code would have expired before I had a chance to hand it over if I'd applied much earlier.
Strange thing was, I applied once and was given TWO codes before I logged out - and I even think while I was logged in I glanced something that said you can have up to five codes simultaneously, but I only applied for one - there's not enough room in the drive for five!
Anyway, I assumed that some kind of new implementation/teething glitch which did not matter had given me two codes for the price of one, but dutifully made a note of both of them, 'just in case'.
I gave the first one to Hertz and it didn't work although I have no idea why. Thank goodness the second one did work. I was pretty glad I had had sufficient doubts to make a note of both codes.
But do DVLA know what they are doing?
I have my doubts about the finer aspects ... !0
