It's my birthday today.

Over the last couple of weeks I have been thinking about what I have to show for my life. I have a great OH and a lovely DD (15). We also have Mr D our doggie who is 3. We have only had him a couple of months from a rescue centre but he is doing well. We have a nice flat, a lovely garden and finally after four years of waiting, I finally got an allotment last week. But, I also have DEBT.

Of course I do right or I wouldn't be here. I've been a long time lurker on here and have followed some really inspirational threads which got me thinking that I can clear mine. As it stands today it is £10496.16 and since the beginning of June I have already paid £370.22.

And the biggest thing I have changed in the last couple of weeks is that I have stopped smoking. Two weeks and 4 days to be precise. I am moving the money over to a savings account daily and already I have £126.00 in that account. Unbelievable that I just might as well have put a lighter to that every day. I am so determined that I know I won't fail this time and to be honest I feel great.

I'm looking forward to getting started on YNAB and hopefully have some support along the way from some of the lovely people that I know are on here.

It's sunny in Gretchen world today so I'm off to work, out for tea and then try and get an hour down the lottie. More on that to come.

Wish me luck, I need it.

Hi Gretchen - Well done for starting a diary - and for listing your debts, that's something I've never done on here but should get round to (especially since my debts are over 3 times yours:eek:)

Wishing you well on your DF journey!!!

  • Thanks HB. My light bulb moment was when I realised how much I actually spent on smoking. I had to tell Lilt to sit down lol.

Since then though have got all my debts sorted and logged just waiting for YNAB xx

    Hi Gretchen

welcome to the diaries and congratulations on quitting smoking.

I too use YNAB and think its Fab.

Good luck on the debt busting
  • Thanks Ammeretto. If I'd know it was this easy I would have done it years ago. Although I have tried in the past and failed after a couple of days. This time feel fine and it's better as I see my savings that I've made from doing it go up.

  • Had a lovely day yesterday and got a bit of money so I bought myself two pairs of jeans and a pair of shorts today. It felt good spending money on myself without feeling guilty.

Usually my birthday money gets swallowed up in running the flat etc so I put it in a different purse to keep separate.

Weather not that good this afternoon so didn't get down to the allotment. Hopefully tomorrow as there is so much weeding to do.

Still feeling positive if a little tired.

  • Another £40.00 paid off one of the loans today.

Spent a bit of my money saved from smoking in myself and DD. It was nice being able to treat us and I've also been able to buy a new blazer for school for her without thinking about it.

No way will I start smoking again now. Feels so good putting that money away daily and it being there for something we need.

  • I've just realised how nice it is to have NSD's. Before I gave up smoking I was so envious seeing people notch these up. I've had two this week already and one spent £1 yesterday on a snack.

Went to the allotment yesterday and came back with 5lbs of broad beans and a little punnet of strawberries. Think I should have started at the strawberry bed first and I would have had a lot more. Slugs and birds have had a good munch though.

More weeding after work tonight and might try and plant done more peas.

Hope everyone is enjoying the weather.
