Heading says NA cars. Was enlightening him to decent NA cars, even if they are prestige brands - particular the BMW 3.0. You would be missing one of the very best by ignoring it because of the badge on the back.

Did any other manufacturers make jekyll and hyde style motors?

What do you mean by jekyll and hyde style? Quiet and comfortable to drive until the cam timing changes above about 4000rpm? If so, you're really just looking for anything available with about 2.5+ litre displacement.

There's no reason a turbo can't provide a smooth driving experience without a screaming dump valve.

Lol enlightening, I guess I just didn't explain myself too well in the OP. I'm well aware of BM's straight 6 but that's not the sort of thing. I think I already knew the answer that a variable cam with lift is what I'd prefer rather than some bloated V6.

Oh, and I'm not looking at BMWs and Mercs and other prestige brands, just your 'average' manufacturers.

No point listing what the OP doesn't want though.

I know, I got carried away because I've wanted to supercharge a Fez ST for a while. But ITB's in a Fez are very nice. Depending on what OP wants to do with the car, remove some of the weight and you'd have a monster.

So we're back to just listing "any" car then?

The NA straight six produces up to around 240BHP.

I'd have a 330Ci Coupe over a Clio 182 any day of the week!

Not a big fan of engines you have to wind out to 10,000 revs, but you would probably be best in a Civic Type R if thats your bag.

Celica - whilst good in their time - really look past it these days.

    Flat 6?

    Porsche 911 is NA.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

    True

As is a Boxster or Cayman.

    But premium brand again....

How about the MG ZT 260. Looks like your grandads Rover 75 but the oomph really gave a few people a shock when I had one

Exactly... pointless saying 'not prestige' if people just list bimmers and porkers. Why not just ignore the age range and mention old Chevys.
