Missing CHAPS

Options
Has anyone else experienced a missing CHAPS payment? Completed a chaps online last Friday told Monday by solicitor monies not received and I've been chasing my tail ever since the bank want/need 48 to trace payment, but as of yet I have had no positive response from them other than they are looking into it. This has to be the most frustrating situation I have ever been in. All account numbers and name were correct, and Nationwide keep telling me it was sent, so where is it!!??? Any help or advice appreciated :(

Are you sure you made the payment by CHAPS rather than Faster Payments? I ask primarily because I wasn't aware of any banks that provided CHAPS payment facilities via online banking.

If you genuinely did send the payment by CHAPS (for which you will undoubtedly have been charged):
The bank are giving you the runaround, the whole point of a CHAPS payment is that the bank know precisely when and where the payment was sent and will know that it arrived - That said if your bank have told you the money has been sent (which essentially involves the recipient confirming they've received it) if the money hasn't shown up in the recipient account, it's likely the recipient bank that's at fault.
You might want to ask your solicitor to check with their bank as they should be able to see whether any CHAPS payments arrived that haven't yet been allocated correctly.

CHAPS requires a bit more work than a normal payment as its checked going out and checked going in and typically takes about 20-30 minutes. Acknowledge is sent to the sender bank electronically too.

Have Nationwide told you that they received confirmation it arrived? Its one thing to see it debited from your account but they get that further acknowledgement from the receiving bank. Did they get that?

It could help trace whether its a problem at Nationwide's end or the receiving banks end. (no acknowledgement puts problem at Nationwide. Acknowledgement puts problem at receiving bank)

Nationwide let you send CHAPS payments online. I did it just the other week when buying my property. There's a £20 charge for it.
  • It was definitely a CHAPS payment, you can do them online now with quite a few banks. They've provided me with the swift message reference number of the transaction so solicitors banks can chase from their end although they are saying they can't find it. How can they just lose it! As you say the whole point of these payments is to be transparent from start to finish.

If they have the SWIFT Message reference number then the solicitor's bank shouldn't have a problem tracing it, providing your bank can confirm to you they received SWIFT confirmation of the acknowledgement of receipt.

Did you use mobile banking to do the payment, because Nationwide were launching their new app on Friday. I got a message saying that for any transactions I had to now download the new app as the old app would be obsolete.
Its amazing how these banks can't even do simple calculations correctly..............
