Help - bike snapped in half!

Hi folks,
I was riding through central London on Tuesday when without warning my Carrera folding bike snapped in half! I was lucky that it happened just as I was about to pull away from a junction, if it had broken a minute earlier I had a bus on my inside and a lorry on my right!
I tweeted to Halfords and they told me to take it to my local store, which I've done but they are saying that I need my original receipt from when I bought the bike. I got the bike 2/3 years ago so I don't have a receipt, and I paid in cash so I can't show a payment on my bank statement, what can I do?
Halfords are the only company that sell this bike, Carrera is their own brand, so it's not as if I could have bought it from anyone else.
What rights do I have?

standard SAD FART rights, lack of a receipt should not be a problem.0
-
But they are insisting that I produce a receipt.0

how old is it?
Halfords may be the only place that sells them new, but for all they know you may have found it that way in a skip.0 -
It's not brand new, I've had it at least 2 1/2 years, possibly longer. (and despite a lack of receipt I didn't find it in a tip!)0

You need a proof of purchase.
You may then need to prove that the problem is due to an inherent fault. In other words, the thing didn't fall in half while you were racing down Snowdon or some such. Please don't say you have never been to Snowdon... Halfords don't know that.
Have a read of MSE's Consumer Rights guide.0 -
Yikes, glad you're ok.0

Can you find the purchase on a bank or credit card statement?0

(I know, I read the OP; just putting the store's perspective on it.)0
