What about those who are (or will soon be) 60+ and don't get a pension?

Not sure about that. All I know about is the card you could get.
Strangely, we still used to issue the card for widows, who could be very young. If I recall, it used to confirm eligibility for pension. Not sure about what the situation is now that widows pensions have changed.
I could find out if anyone wants to know.

Someone mentioned the Electoral Identity card. I have one. It's free for everyone, has a photo and in N.I. is as valid as a passport.

They'd probably accept a photocopy of the page from your passport, which would be easy to carry with you.

I've never been asked to prove my age, so either I look it :( or they think a woman wouldn't 'lie' her age in an upwards direction!

I've never been asked to prove my age, except in jocular fashion at checkout when buying booze

I guess I look like a bald old git so age proof not required

I was recently asked to prove my age (which is greater than 60 as it happens). I couldn't, which led to my losing a concession.

For the future, so that I am not impelled to carry a passport with me at all times, I was hoping to find an official looking card bearing the legend 60+.

When I search for this online, it turns out that there are organizations who are prepared for a fee to verify and issue a card bearing the logo 18+. Their blurb appears to indicate that they think this is a good enough for age verification of anyone's needs. However many charging institutions have learned to count to numbers greater than 18, so I was wondering if anyone issues a more suitable card?

The Citizen Card - this shows your age and is a national ID too. I only learnt about it through some work I was doing yesterday helping a jobseeker. Looks very useful.

Generally, showing your pension book is regarded as proof of age for eligibility for concessions. However, if you receive pension by direct transfer and you do not have a pension book then you used to be able to request a form from DSS/DWP. The form was called BR464. It was a card the size of a credit card.
I cannot see any reason why they would discontinue that scheme, so I would assume that it still is the case where you simply make the request to DSS/DWP.
Do you want me to check?

The card stopped around 2001/2002 and was never replaced with anything else

My husband has never been challenged about his age when using an over 60's discount.

He doesn't look particularly decrepit, but he has got grey hair, so I suppose people accept he's 'mature'

Next time there's a film we want to see at the local Odeon Silver screen for the over 55's, we intend to go along.

I'm 55 so I'm eligible, but I'll be quite disappointed if they let me in without asking me to prove my age!:rotfl:

It costs £15 though so I think the electoral roll card is a better alternative. I've also never been asked for proof of age and was particularly fed up the first time, as I was convinced they'd say 'no way, you're much too young'. I always carry my freedom pass and it might be worth finding out what age your local authority issues them.

Looks useful, it's a shame there's not something similar in the rest of the UK. Of course, there was going to be before 'civil liberties' groups kicked up a fuss and it was quietly shelved.
