is it not 10% +2 for speed awareness? so that would be 46mph?
    It varies. I had one for 40 in a (non-urban) 30 limit.

Link to the map isn't showing a specific location - it just goes to general Oxford / Aylesbury area - but, from your description of the signs, you might have a defence. Can you give a specific loaction (road numbers etc)?

These are the coordinates for google map: 51.892524,-1.162183
If i'm looking at the correct exit road from the roundabout, A41, signposted Oxford and Aylesbury (avoiding low bridge), I can only see two small 40mph 'repeater' signs - which road where you on when you entered the roundabout ??

Umm... If we're saying "But the repeaters weren't easily visible", then you might like to think about what the presence of all those streetlights says about the default limit...

Yep, that's exactly it, hopefully this URL will work better.

I was coming down the A41 bypass around bicester. I crossed the roundabout bisecting the A41 to Oxford and the B4030 from Bicester. This was to go to the service station for a rest stop.

I then left the service station and went onto the same roundabout (but opposite side) and took the 3rd exit back onto the A41 towards Oxford.

As I mentioned, this has a feeder lane coming in from the left (As can be seen on the Google map), so you are automatically looking at this as you are coming off the roundabout from this direction. Looking on Google maps, 50 yards up the road, on the right is the only 40 mph sign I could find. But you naturally aren't looking there because of the traffic on your left hand side.

No idea if there is anything in it and surely to contest it is going to cost more than the fine?

Like I said - if you're going to say "But I didn't see the repeaters", then you should have gone by the default for the road. And, for a non-motorway road with streetlights, that's 30mph.

If you don't accept the FPN, prepare to argue the case in front of a magistrate. If you lose, then the fine will be higher, and there will be costs.

    Usually 110% plus 9, so 53 in a 40 limit.

As I said from the initial post, I hold my hands up that I was going to fast for the speed limit of that particular road; completely my fault and I will be accepting the £100 fine.

I had just wondered, as others said I might have a defence, if that might hold water? From what you have said though, it wouldn't.

Thank you for your help and replies

So the 40mph limit on the A41 must have been in force for some distance before that roundabout - those 'repeater' signs do not indicate the start of a 40mph, they indicate that a 40mph entered some distance before this point is still in force.

You (and the other drivers who got caught) must have missed these 40mph signs on the A41 just a 100 yards or so before the roundabout:
