Are merchants legally required to give a credit card receipt?

It appears that some places give different receipts between chip & pin and contactless payments. Contactless payments may not always give a receipt for the transaction. I will therefore not be using my card for contactless payment in future. I've been meaning to sever antenna in the card so it is completely disabled so I will try to do this, this weekend.
Why do this? You are already protected against fraud.0 -
Why do this? You are already protected against fraud.
You're protected against fraud but this requires you identifying the fraud first. If you don't identify it then you're not protected and the fraudsters have got away with it.
I would much rather fraud is prevented from happening in the first place. You can't always do that but there are new attack vectors for contactless payment cards compared to non-contactless variety. Given that contactless payment gives very little benefit over chip and PIN then I'd rather just disable that feature all together.
Allow fraudsters to skim my credit card as they brush past me is not something I want to be a victim of. Even though it's only a small amount they can grab, by contributing to their victim pool, I am encouraging them to do it more and thus fuel them to target me as a victim again on another day. Disabling contactless payment on my card would stop me being a victim for this fraud completely and in the process I make it just a little bit less desirable for that fraudster. If more people did that, then the fraudster would get less money from that skimming technique and thus hopefully at some point it would not be worth their time using that technique.
Whether you agree with me or not, I do not have trust or faith in contactless payment cards. I've said this before but if they implemented something on the card that would only enable contactless payment only when you actually wanted it then that would be fine. One idea I had was have a break in the circuit. Put two contact points on the surface of the card that requires the user to put their finger of to complete the circuit and thus allow contactless payment to work. This would be ok as the card would be as good as a non-contactless payment card while it was in my wallet not being used.0 -
Visa are using product placement in Coronation Street. When one of the characters was seen paying with their Visa contactless card against a Visa branded card reader in "The Bistro", a receipt printed without any prompting and was handed to the customer immediately.
They're clearly setting an example in their advertising, shame some merchants can't keep to this.0 -
Retailers are obliged to issue a transaction receipt except in certain circumstances.
If you are paying using Contactless then you generally have to specifically request one, and they must give you one. Many, but not all, terminals are programmed by default not to print a customer copy for these transactions. This, of course, relies on the cashier knowing how to print the customer copy.
If you are paying by Chip or Magstripe then you must be issued with a receipt unless you specifically state that you do not want one. In practice many cashiers will ask if you want one, which I always say is far better than having them all blow around the car park because they have been thrown on the floor. Customer copies are always printed for these transactions.
There are several mobile chip and pin readers available, one example being iZettle. Of course these do not have built in printers, though at a vast expense they can provide you with one. The mobile apps for these devices will ask for an email address or mobile phone number so that a digital receipt can be issued, however if a customer insists they say you must issue a paper receipt. This can be handwritten, and should include the merchant's name, the date, the card type, the last 4 digits of the card number, the expiry date and of course the transaction amount.
I assume that this kind of handwritten receipt could also be issued in an emergency if there was a problem with a printer on a 'proper' card terminal, however I would be shocked if you could find a cashier anywhere who would be willing to do this.0 -
I also try to avoid contactless and am yet to use it once, despite my CC having the facility and me having shopped in places that accept it. Paying by chip and pin in McDonald's, I've never been issued with a receipt. Presumably, they get around it by issuing one if it was specifically requested. I'd guess that unless it is, then technically they haven't failed to provide a receipt.
I once asked for a receipt in Wetherspoons and the till roll wasn't working or something so they got me a printout from upstairs. I gather it must be a legal requirement. When I have asked for a receipt in Wetherspoons normally, some of them have just given me the card receipt whereas other bar staff have given both, that and the itemised receipt showing what was purchased.0
