Where i work, the terminal only gives a customer copy if they oay by chip and pin. If they pay with contactless, it only prints a merchant copy (however we can print a customer copy and i always ask if people want one)

Our system also doesn't automatically print the itemized vat one, unless we do it manually.

I'm sure the law is a receipt must always be available for the customer, but the merchant does not have to automatically give you one. But if asked for one, must issue one.

As already stated, the law only requires a VAT receipt to be given and then on request. If a company isnt VAT registered then the law doesnt require them to give receipts.

What their contract states with their merchant bank services and Visa/ Mastercard scheme rules are a different matter but are not "the law"

9/10 shops i use contactless, a receipt is not generated (Greggs, Subway,Poundland, McD's) (seeing a trend here.. whoops!)

a VAT receipt is printed mostly, but a lot of places don't generate a contactless receipt.

Not sure about the rest but in Subway when I have paid contactless a receipt prints off for the till, they can then press a button to print a copy of it but its not itemised just the amount you paid.
All that glitters is not gold.

It appears that some places give different receipts between chip & pin and contactless payments. Contactless payments may not always give a receipt for the transaction. I will therefore not be using my card for contactless payment in future. I've been meaning to sever antenna in the card so it is completely disabled so I will try to do this, this weekend.

Our pdq machine at work is only set up to print a Merchant copy when a contactless payment has been used. Every time, we have to go in via a supervisor password in order to print a duplicate... which then prints 2 copies; customer and merchant.

We asked about having this changed and were basically told no. If a customer wishes to pay via contactless, then this method is "technically" a quick and paper free method. If they want a credit card slip then we request that they enter their pin.
Contactless payments are designed to let you make low value transactions quickly and conveniently. If you'd like a receipt to confirm the contactless transaction, just ask the retailer when you pay although in some circumstances they may not be able to provide one

Will I receive a receipt for my transactions?

Please note that this may not be directly available in certain circumstances for example, when using Transport for London.

I'm hating the whole contactless payment idea more and more each minute. Gotta hack up my credit card to disable the antenna ASAP

Any particular reason for liking card receipts? Cannot say I ever take them, though I will take the till receipt for anything of value or if there is a risk of needing to exchange it

A few years back I spotted a fraudulent transaction on one of my cards. I easily spotted it because it was for a retailer that I've never bought anything from. I contacted the credit card company and I was covered for the full amount. Since then, I've spotted a small handful of transactions that I was in some doubt whether I actually did do or not. Unfortunately they were in retailers I do shop but I just didn't recall going to those shops. They were for relatively small amounts so I put it down to being legitimate purchases that I did but I had just forgotten about. Since then, I keep every single card receipt and ATM withdrawal and mark off everything on my statements.

Fortunately I've not spotted any other fraudulent transactions but it now takes very little effort as I have a good system in place. I'm sure it'll come in handy one day when I spot some rogue transaction but for now, this is the reason why I keep every single receipt. I keep the receipt for 2 years (unless its tied to something with warranty that's longer than 2 years).

It's a good system and it's something that works for me. I can't remember the exact numbers but some article estimated £10s or even £100s of millions of unnoticed fraudulent transactions each year. Not sure how they came up with that figure but I guess with so many people not actually looking at their statements in any great depth, it is believable.

But you can always ask for one. I have done in subway and KFC. Don't go to the other shops you mention.
