It's such a shame that this one is limited to those within range of a Fultons, Home Bargains etc. I was thinking today about the fact that there is an abundance of Sada stores where I live - at least 5 within a 15 minute drive, if all the glitches suddenly were only available in a Waitrose store, I would be snookered - nearest store is 45 minutes away!!! I think I would have to move!!!!

Home bargains i did but many were empty and those that weren't were when i left :D

I would swap my high power job (if you can call it that) for your lifestyle (although I would not want the worry and heart ache that you have had in relation to DS1). Enjoy and be proud that you are a lovely woman with great kids and grandkids x

I think you now have to earn over £21 thousand now before you start paying back student loans - is this correct - can anyone confirm?

My eldest because her course was 5 or 6 years ago had to start paying when she started earning £15 k, first job after uni and she was over this ammount - I think its the same for the youngest one but I doubt if he will earn £15 k for a few years yet. I think its a percentage and they send you a statement every year.

After a certain number of years I think its written off - again not sure how many, 20 years???

Yes. You won't have to pay anything back until you are earning £21k and even at that rate it's not a huge or unmanageable repayment.

I was one of the ones with the 15k limit on a student loan YEARS ago and I worked in civil service after uni. The only time I got a student loan repayment taken out was if I got a bonus that took me over my starting wage. And it's 30 years it's written off after.

The media have caused hysteria and got things out of context. YES you are taking on 'a debt' with student loans. On the other hand, if you don't succeed in getting a good job......the likelihood of ever paying it all back is unlikely.

If you get a good job with good pay, you will pay for your education within a year or 2. £40,000 is a huge amount of money but quite honestly if you can get a good job on it and earn that for the rest of your life......is it really a hardship to pay back what's been given to you? You can do what you like with what you earn after that.

No one is stopped from an education because of these changes. No one pays upfront! We are so lucky in that respect. Every student website on the Internet is telling people to not let the changes affect people.......Getting something for nothing is good but times are hard and everything can't be free or subsidised

maybe so? in our current climate you will be replaced by someone from another country looking for opportunities?

I'm just saying as someone who has a degree, a masters degree and hopefully soon a PhD that the earning potential is great enough to more than pay for it.

don't get me wrong my head hurts thinking that doing it that way means you pay more tax and go right back to the start of the circle. Work hard, earn more, pay more tax........it really is a never ending cycle.

I don't like the amount of tax I pay. But I pay it because the society I chose to live in has many benefits to it. And someone has to pay.

I just don't get why we moan. Where else could your kids be educated to such a high standard, your family be looked after medically for free, and everything else we have available to us?

    I have caught up!

Emerald, I will send you the info tomorrow as I am off work and I am staying at home.

We came home from hospital and decided to have a drink!.... a rather large drink, very quickly! So be warned if you read, it is a little/very waffly!

Cheery, it is great to see you posting x My drinks fridge has been emptied 3 times in the last 2.5 weeks... I think we are becoming alcoholics!

My view on the discussions and sorry if I offend (there is no intention)

Firstly FC is clearly going through very difficult time, in the main FC is kind hearted person. FC comes from a totally different world than I do, although I do think we are very similar in lots of aspects.

Secondly SFSB, I love you, your posts, especially your wit and generosity of your nature. You are one of my favs x (that does not mean I want to run away with you and have babies)..... pelvic floor muscles have gone.... I know should have reframed form f****** during my experimental stage!!

As I have commented before, I did not begin to learn to read and write properly until I became a mum at 20. I was adamant that my children would not have has the gypsy view on read/writing etc that I had.

OH worked hard, whilst I was at home caring for the kids (Zippy... I saw the white writing!) and working part-time to supplement the income. We moved house often, and made some money but settled for schools. We were lucky to be able to afford a very small house in a very good area. One day I arrived home with 2 other kids, OH did not blink. We really struggled, I remember giving the kids toast for tea. I have home educated DS1 when he was struggling at school who was not diagnosed within the education system of having class F dyslexia. And fought for the rights of the other children to access education based on meritocracy. God I sound like a martyr.... no intention!

When the kids were all in school, I went to uni, but paid my own fees (I was the only one in the course). On the last year a bursary was introduced and all fees were paid, I accepted this but still had to work 3 shifts a week. I got a first! .... through sweat not brains!

With the exception of claiming child benefit I have been very fortunate not to have to claim benefits or money for my plus 2 (although we did have an 8 month period of no income... I am frugal... we only just made this). I was adamant that I would not replicate my aunts/uncle/cousins lifestyle....and would have sold my OH body to ensure we did not claim benefits... strangely he was rather accepting of this proposition, although on reflection sometimes I do wonder if I have made the right choices.. especially on a sunny day!.

As OH become increasingly ill, I took on the role of earner. I used to cry during the holidays when I saw other mums with their children. A stupid moral position became a stupid sacrifice. But on the plus side all the children are wonderful human beings

    Now the positives are:

DS1 is happy, he has travelled the world working (although I miss him).
DS2 has just finished reading maths at a russell group uni (he is class E dsylexic).
DS3 is doing well in his job, and is being called Sir at the age of 20 (not sure of this).

My additional children, DD1 has just finished her 1st year uni, and DD1+ has just finished his 2nd year.

I work within the field of protecting children, and work around 40 hours extra each week without pay. I still feel like I am Vermuyden.... with my finger in the dyke whilst a tidal wave is heading towards me!

    Now my adult position

    1. It does not matter how much money you have (or whether this is from work or benefits)... are you a nice person?
    2. It does not matter what job you have.... have you loved the people close to you enough?
    3. If you cannot think of a nice word to say.... shut up!

Right... SSM get off your preaching post!

    :o:o:o:o

They are not written off, DS1 is paying his and rightly so.

But it is amazing that when access to Uni education was restricted to the rich.. it was free. When it was open to equally intelligent people from poor backgrounds... it was chargeable!

Do you know if the limit of 5 per email is still not in place after midnight? I saw it mentioned the other day and wondered if it's worth staying up to put extra codes in and grab another box tomorrow. Thanks

Between midnight and 1am it doesn't seem to limit you to 5.
