I'm not sure how far Bangor is from you Rhos....but part of me wonders that the whole uni experience is one that young adults take away from home rather than going somewhere local.
We have an excellent uni very close to us that does the exact course DS1 wants next year, but he doesnt want to live at home or indeed within a few mile radius of us...and I can understand that....so he's hopefully results willing going to go 4 hours away to an equally good uni,the difference being its not on the doorstep.
Aside from the social side of uni life...it is a valuable lesson in growing and developing and one that many young people benefit from. Its a chance for independence and hopefully to learn life skills that you just dont get when you still live at home.

I never went to uni,nor wanted to but I actually think that in scrapping funding and making it difficult for making a choice based on wheres convenient rather than wheres best to study opens up a whole new debate of families supporting and funding their kids much later into life and denying them the experience of "flying the nest"
In your sons case though yes he wont be going to uni for a few years but I guess its good that he will have a bit of an insight into the workings of one, even if it isnt where he might eventually study....
I'm a great believer in the 'flying the nest' part of uni edification (lol, meant education, but think this might express it better!) and quite sad that so many people are now convinced that the 'going away bit' is no longer affordable, even if it is., and yes, what happened to looking for the best course??
Our DS left home to go to uni at 18, had a 'glitch' and it took 4 years instep of 3, we subsidised, he worked, he had a student loan he came back once for resits, but has never lived at home since. He now has a very well paid job, wife and children and we see each other regularly. I'm still not convinced that it would have been any less expensive if he had stayed at home and we would have felt responsible for all his expenses for an extra 4 years.
Well it may have been 'cos years later we realised that each time he was home I 'slipped' him £20 not knowing that DH had too.
