Sadly these days its often the case that if you are in work your employer 'owns' you and whatever your contract says you do the hours you have to, not the ones you are supposed to. There is no option but to work all hours, however dull it makes you.
And numerous people like my OH don't get overtime pay - if there is work to be done, it gets done, no one else to do it. When he goes back in 2 weeks after sick leave he will be gradually catching up with the backlog - no one else to do his job while he is away.

Working a standard 9 to 5 week is not an option in many professions. Working as little as you can may the ideal option but it's not possible in reality - it won't run hospitals, doctors surgeries, schools, the fire service, railways, transport systems etc

This is even more so the case for people who are self employed.

Mostly it's not a case of work longer hours to get the latest gadgets or materials things - it's just to get bills paid and food on the table. The bills get bigger, the budget gets tighter, you run to stay still.

Mostly you just count your blessings that you are in work, whatever the circumstances, that you can pay your own way, that you have your health and your family.

Been in exactly the same situation many times where people judge you using disabled facility's they think you have to have no legs to be disabled.:(

I also have a child with a very rare life threatening condition. We have been at his bedside on a few occasions praying for him to pull through just before last Christmas was the last time.

With regards to the bull sh!! of who works and who does not and who claims benefits are people forgetting the highest claimants from the state.

Claiming for Tampax duck houses and to get there moat cleaned And flat screen TVs while appearing to work but the fact of the matter is they are on one big jolly up. Whilst shafting us common folk :(

Now we have television programs slagging people off for claiming benefits its a distraction method to divide society :(

People should mind there own business where someone else's life is concerned unless they are causing harm or loss to them directly

And if you are dull enough to work all the hours god sends more fool you as life is to short. We work to live so why kill yourself working :(

Work as little as you can spend as much time as possible with your kids family and friends that's all that really matters.

Not materialistic things and working your balls off to be a slave to the system. :(

Rant over back to lurking :D

You are right about the self-employed. Office moves have to be done at weekends, people need their broadband fixing on a Sunday (two teachers desperately trying to get marks in on time), people need you to do jobs at 6 in the morning or 8 at night, everything has to be dropped to sort out a company that has just lost it's phone lines. Just wish it brought us the sort of money that it deserves, but it does not happen with all the expenses too.
What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare
