Aww!! That's great news Happygreen. So glad she is on the mend now. I bet that's a relief. It is so horrible when they are not well isn't it? Must be all the TLC you have been giving her.:j Bless her!! Thanks for letting us all know how she is doing.

Awww bless them and mummy duck. Hope they all do well and thrive nicely.
Still getting around 18 hens eggs a day and around 3 to 5 ducks eggs. Wish the ducks would lay theirs in their hotel because they are laying them in the garden and the blooming Magpies are spotting them and getting to them before we do.
Hope everyone is well and their chooks, ducks and geese too!!

Hello everyone :hello:
Our new arrivals have settled in well and the cockerel seems to be enjoying his life immensely. He has the luck of the Irish, having survived sexing at 3 days old, then life in a chicken farm of 10,000 hens for 18 weeks (he hid well from my SiL) - once spotted, he and another boy were separated into a small field with a brick building and despite not being chosen on paper by majority vote, he was the only one in the shed when we went to pick the white cockerel up, so we took pity and took him home instead. I'm glad as he is very handsome, if a little noisy :rotfl:
Back up to full egg production and delighted to report that our grey Leghorn is laying beautiful blue eggs!0 -

Hi Dizzy
Nice to see you posting on here with news from your new flock.
Glad your Cockerel is handsome mine is too. I could sit and watch mine for hours if I had the time. He runs round the garden like a looney if one of his girls starts squawking somewhere in the garden. If another one starts he comes running down to see what is happening to that one too. Poor boy wears himself out with 25 to look after. They do keep him on his toes.
Our Indian Runner duck lays beautiful blue eggs too. They are my favourite colour eggs out of all the eggs we get.
Homemade quiche for supper tonight and I can't wait.
Edwink x
P.S Around 18 hens eggs a day here still and 3 to 5 ducks eggs. I love my cockerels as well. I have two Pekin bantams and watching the hens give them what for is so funny. It's very touching when they find a tasty morsel and call the girls over rather than eating it themselves.
Egg production is excellent. Even the oldest two hens (3 1/2) still lay eggs most days. I get between 6 - 9 a day from 9 hens.
I'm collecting 6 ex-commercial hens on Saturday so I'm sectioning a bit of the run off for them. I was going to put them in the coop when it's dark and hope for the best in the morning but I'm not sure what condition they will be in so I thought it might be better to give them a few days recovery time.0 -
Lots and lots and lots of dust bathing going on here today now that the weather has finally cheered up. My girls are loving it and there is dry soil being flicked everywhere including the main path up our garden. Hooray for them. I said to them all this morning if I spot a grubby hen at bed time tonight someone is going to be in trouble as there is no excuse today not to have a bath in this warm weather. I hope they were all listening :rotfl:
*Horseygirl* Did you collect your rescue hens on Saturday ? I agree totally with your tactic regarding settling them in when they arrive. Sometimes the weaker ones will be so scared of what is happening they really do not need one of the bigger hens picking on them as soon as their feet hit the ground.:)
*Dizzy* How are yours doing now? and how is that handsome boy of yours doing?
*Smallholding* How are the little ducklings coming along? getting bigger by the day I bet!! Was it 6 in the end or were there anymore that were hiding under their mummy?
*Happygreen* How is your oldie hen doing now? Is she continuing to make improvements? or is she fully better? I do hope she is ok.
Right off to check to see who has not had a bath today yet
Have fun everyone and enjoy the summer now it has finally arrived.

One of our neighbours who regularly spoils our girls bought them round some chard today. Great excitement. Gracie grabbed hers up and ran away with it, hiding behind the feed station so no-one could steal her precious leaf.
Its great to see them enjoying themselves so much.It is a good idea to be alone in a garden at dawn or dark so that all its shy presences may haunt you and possess you in a reverie of suspended thought.

Edwink - yes I collected six on Saturday evening. They were running two hours late so I expect the poor things were exhausted. They were in good condition actually - they were from a free range farm as opposed to caged birds - so apart from very pale small combs and a couple being on the thin side - not as bad as I'd feared.
One of them is quite bold and has flown over each morning to join my other hens and was amazingly adventurous when she came out with the others. Funny enough when I went back into the enclosure to clean the new girls out, she followed me back to join them. The others are very timid and stay under the shelter but when they hear me coming they do come out to see me. I have a little seat in there and often waste time just sitting there.:)
Three eggs on Sunday and three today:)0
