Thanks edwink xx
Yes, she's the last of our original girls, we've had her about a year and 8 months, so she'll be just over 3 now. Her and Mildred were always slower than this rowdy bunch of hooligans that the other three are, and with Maud hanging around with Mildred for her last couple of weeks, maybe we just didn't notice she was slowing down anyway herself? And maybe normal old age coupled with this stress...
We'll see what the vet says. I know when we didn't know what was wrong with Beaky a few months back they jabbed her with all sorts, antibiotics, vitamins, calcium etc (in her case we thought it might be egg related) and she pulled through.
Anyway, no use speculating too much at this time of night. I know the outlook's probably not good and can appreciate she's had a good life with us. Let's see what tomorrow brings.
(Tomorrow is also my birthday so I would very much like it to bring some good news!) 😥🙄2 -
Back from the vets, Maud has jaundice 🙄 But that's a symptom, and there's not really any way of telling what's caused it. If it's a virus he said it likely would have spread to the others before now. Might be a parasite - I wormed them all when Mildred got ill and the others seem fine, but maybe they are just more robust & ate more of the medicated food. Could just be liver failing from old age.
We'd noticed both Mildred and Maud's feet were a bit more yellow than the others, but you never quite know whether you were imagining things, or whether they'd always been like that.
Apparently she weighs less than half what she should 😮😥
He's given her heavy duty steroids and antibiotics, and hopefully she'll pick up in the next day or two and start eating properly. He said she might go downhill again though - they can give her more steroids if so but won't be able to keep her going forever.
She's inside with us for a bit with a tray of tempting treats having a little nap.
Hope you and all your beaky pals are well xx3 -
That’s sort of goodish news in that hopefully she’ll respond to the meds and perk up a bit.
Hopefully you’ll have some cake today that you can share with her! 😁(I just lurve spiders!)

Aww, bless her. Sometimes we need the vets to help us and them, don't we?. Hopefully, she will pull through this ok and put on some weight in the process. I can see a huge chunk of birthday cake heading her way this afternoon so I do hope she at least eats some of it.
It is always a good indication by checking the others and seeing how they are when it comes to viruses or respiratory illnesses. I had one some years ago who had a runny nose so I immediately removed her away from the others and kept her indoors with us overnight. The following day she was given antibiotics by our vets and thankfully in time she pulled through ok. I still remember the vets face when he asked how many other hens we had here and when I told him he said that I now needed to check all the others urgently as soon as we got home. But I had already done that before leaving in case I needed to take any of the others to the vets as well.
Hens are so good on their little car rides I have found and they look so cute just sitting there taking in their surroundings. I've never had a hen who has freaked out by having to go out in the car and have always put this down to the fact they came to live with us via a car ride and have been happier because of it. I suppose that's just the way I have seen it. I guess.
Do keep us updated when you can Cheery. Fingers crossed she will be ok.
