I photographed a turkey in Italy once, like you do........

It's just a turkey. In Italy. Dunno why I snapped it, really! :rotfl:

Not Italy! Croatia! Got my hols muddled up!




So....a turkey......in Croatia.

On a goat cheese farm with goats. And a turkey. And lots of puppies.

And lots of cheeses.


Oh! And a hen in the background!

So here they are! Croatian puppies with mum.


Some of us, ahem! had to be restrained from filching said puppies away in our luggage!

The turkeys are wonderful.
At the minute and being in a new , much smaller area we are keeping it that way through the winter cold.. we can extend but will wait until spring for now as they all go indoors through the wet daylight hours.

They free range but section areas off to secure them from 6 bouncy dogs and as 2 are Great Danes and one a terrier it can become a battle of paws and claws!!

Their new shed was a tad bigger than needed so during this bad bout of weather it's a great safe haven

You never hear of turkey eggs.
Do turkeys lay eggs as often as hens and ducks?

If so, why aren't we eating them? The eggs, I mean?

I had never thought about a turkey and their eggs so just had a quick Google and found these.

Wow!! £1.50 per egg and they are out of stock in that particular supermarket.

From what I've learnt tonight, turkeys lay around 100 eggs a year which isn't that many considering hens lay around 300 or so. They contain the same amount of nutrients as hens eggs BUT nearly twice as many calories and grams of fat plus 4 times as much Cholesterol :eek: Also, although you can now buy turkey eggs most are hatched for turkeys for Christmas dinners etc. Apparently there are 7 to 8 million turkeys eaten every Christmas day in the UK alone :eek: I think I'll just stick to my cauliflower cheese and roast potatoes with lots of veg for my roast dinners. I've been a veggie for 39 years now :dance:

no turkeys aren't prolific layers. They do lay and about the size of a duck egg but more pointier and speckled.

In spring and summer I may get one a week

No it's more of a power to weight ratio, the big dogs are always wary of them and tend to hop and jump about so careful they don't inadvertently hurt them hence separating free range areas
Apart from the terrier all the dogs aren't natural finishers but terrier hasn't many teeth !!
